It was found in my back yard...never a chain link fence there...the site is an old farmstead.

counter weights would not be hollow. that would leave for easy cheating. i does look like a fence rod coupler, but, looks to be too much of a bell at the end. and there is no mount for a knocker so it's not a bell. still looking though!

could it have been part of a Farrowing Crate for loading livestock.?

It is definietly very bell shaped...as stated too much flare for a fence coupler. Michelle...what is a farrowing crate for loading livestock? Whatever it is it may be in the right direction...lots of farming and horse drawn wagon relics found in this area...

I believe most "older" farmers would build their farrows (loading ramps for livestock) so this may not be a good thought!

How about a candle snuffer, I looked for one that might be shaped like that, there are many different kinds, but none that look exactly like that, but close, kinda.

i'm gonna have to say its 1/2 of a H/V fuse..(blown = swellin)
reason for callin a fuse is the # 8 near the Lug in pic # 2...

#8 H/Vwire protection of some sort...

My first thought was some sort of weight for a scale as well.

Can you make out that number?

If so, can you correspond it (taking into consideration the lost chunk of it) to pounds, ounces, etc?
