I'm pretty sure all the examples that I've found were harness related though.

Also... a buckle is a buckle is a buckle. :/

Meaning... if a buckle works to secure a leather strap on one thing and also other things... it would be sold by maker to anyone who needs buckles for their products.

Correct ?

I know if I made a good buckle that worked for all types of leather goods I would sell them to anyone making leather goods.

What about "satchel bags".... bet we may find one.

That is a roller buckle which I would think was used where something needed to be tightened down as opposed to just an adjustment. When it gets down to the nitty gritty, I guess it's really about impossible to know beyond a reason of a doubt.

These are for 'thick' leather straps, like you say mostly on horses, just not exclusively.
