90 Y/O slave interviewed in 1937 (NC).

I remember the first time the Yankees come. They
come galloping down the road, jumping over the pal-
ings, trompling down the rose bushes and messing up
the flower beds. They stomped all over the house, in
the kitchen, pantries, smokehouse, and everywhere,
but they didn't find much, 'cause near about everything
done been hid.

Joe ,
That may sound funny to some of the youngsters here ,

But it sure makes a bunch of sense to me.

Hola OD: You got it my friend. I used to hide my selected pages from the old Sears and Montgomery Wards catalogues in there also -- blushing.

In Mexico during the reveloutions, it was a favorite place to hide valuables whenever bandits or the opposing side arrived.

After all, they didn't have to dive into the err deposits to retrieve them and clean them up. they used the Indian slaves, or Cappy, for that.

There is the vague location of one that a Mexican General tossed the payroll and a large amount of loot into during in a sudden attack by the enemy forces. The house that it belonged to has long since been gone, however the small village still exists - interested in a new career Cappy? It has never been recovered.

...well? Need I say it? When, exactly, did they cut 3 days off of July? 1938?

July 34th. Jeeze!

Someone expects us to believe the account of the former slave, and they can't even get the friggin date right?

Re: 90 Y/O slave interviewed in 1937 (NC).

There were a couple of typos on that page, but the gist of the account was pretty interesting.

Seems like th - I think you can find the actual taped accounts somewhere or other online - Library of Congress website, maybe? That's a fascinating site, anyway.

I can appreciate the re-telling of the former slave's history. I do a lot of research for my THing. I know some of the documents are deliberately mis-typed, etc, to keep others off-the-trail. However, this account has been around for 70+ years! I wouldn't expect anyone to make corrections to the original docs, but I think an addendum of corrections should have been added years ago: Something like, changing July 34 to July 3-4, or July 3rd thru 4th, etc. /Just my 2 cents. :D

(I can feel a rant building up for the Rant section....)
