The last time we were here was nearly 3 years ago & we had a great 2.5 hour grid:

Our plan was simple we had 1 go at this field, as it was a few days behind 'The Hill' field & the Winter Wheat was only just showing. At the start of the day, I called it our '1 hit wonder'. Honestly, we would have been happy with just 1 hammered, but that wasn't the day we ended up with. Although I say 'we', I got all the silver, although I pinched 2 off Cru'dads runs including the Harold I.:laughing7:
Cru'dad did help clear some deep iron though.

5.5 hrs:

1 Scrappy
2 Crotal Bells
Squashed Silver Thimble
16/17th C Spoon Bowl
Mostly 14th C Medieval Buckles
1st C AD Roman Brooch
6th C Saxon Brooch bit (Type I need)
10th-11th C Saxon/Viking Stirrup Terminal bit
Rare type of Roman Bell with openwork. (a first I think)
4 Modern Milled Silver Coins
Poor broken bit of A large Hammered Shilling?
Poor Penny of a York Mint (King unknown)
Henry VIII Durham Mint Penny

Harold I, Harefoot, 1035-1040 cut halfpenny, Beorn of York. I've never had this King before (not sure if its in the Rare or Very Rare bracket!), I think he is one of the last Viking Kings.:headbang: Here is a similar uncut version but not the same mint or moneyer:

We don't know how we do it but we followed our usual 1 day silver blank with this (if you don't count the silver plated shilling).:coffee2:

Your have some very interesting finds Crusader! That silver is beautiful, too! Thanks so much for sharing with us.

Nice finds Crusader! I think I asked you this before but do you sell or keep your finds? If you keep em I would be willing to bet your house is more impressive than most museums...

Keep most other than what I share with the farmers. Plus if its too expensive to keep or give them half the money, then it goes to auction. But that only happens once every 4 years or so.

Nice mix of silver...

I love those odd pieces you come up with Cru such as the Harold I. What Kings or rulers are likely out there that you haven't put your coil over yet?

Crusader,

Thank you for sharing another excellent hunt by you and Cru’dad and congrats on finding the Harold the 1st half penny. Question, what is the item in the middle of the iron ring in the photo just above the silvers. Good luck with your hunts. Walt

It was a really good day out for you and Cru'dad. Would really like to hear if the silver falls into the very rare section. Congrats to you both.

Quite a time range on the finds. Is this an inhabited permission or the middle of nowhere type of spot.

The inletted round thing in picture 5, set within the ring looks like a lower status Anglo Saxon warrior sword belt boss. If it is, its not very often seen. There were some done in gold in the Staffordshire hoard and they are usually called scabbard or belt mounts. The darkening means it might have niello affixed inside the recesses. You might want to get it checked out. That Anglo Saxon penny has got to be pretty scarce also.

A few but the really rare ones.

Its in sight of a Church and close to a small village.

Tough one to answer. There was over 100 mints at the time, so with the combination of a couple of moneyers at each mint, it makes all these rare to find Kings hard to figure out.
We now know the moneyer & mint, but if I had to guess York was one of the bigger mints so a little less rare. But you try finding this reverse type with moneyer & mint on the internet & post a link? (cheers)

UPDATE:

''Nice find, which I have recorded.

As the reverse reads +BE[ ]OFE. this must be a coin of the York moneyer Beorn, which is the only possibility for that combination of letters.''

Sorry bad angle, its a Roman Bell & that's the iron blocking the openwork holes.
