Some kind of brass tag that was used for identifying a variety different things?

I have found bunch like that I have been told by some old timers that they are black farm labor trade tokens .

It does kinda-sorta resemble a slave-hire badge (commonly called a "slave tag"), which were made and used ONLY in Charleston SC. (All with another town on them are fake.) But those genuine slave tags were never hexagonal (six-sided) like your find is.

The photo below shows the genuine octagonal and square/diamond-shaped slave hire tags. Note that they have "Charleston" on them in RAISED letters. The other photo shows several fakes, from various fraudsters on Ebay.

All I can add, is that the style of the '2' is 18th C.
