Normally I would not post all this scrap looking iron stuff on this board, but we are trying to identify every item found as this is a historical site where every item is being cataloged and displayed. I'm just promoting the positive image we mders try so hard to preserve by volunteering my time and finds to the community. So far the historical society I'm working with has a very positive perception regarding metal detecting people. I tell them what a great forum this is and how everyone wants to help each other. It's a wonderful resource here, second to none. Now that's what I'm talking about!

(See pictures I posted earlier here of the manson house and grounds I'm hunting).

Thanks in advance for your help with this. It is greatly appreciated.

Re: 5th Find at the 18Th century farm.

Its always good to hear someone promoting MDers!

Have to agree with Charlie on the pipe flange, you might measure the inside diameter ot the hole too, that might give you an idea on what pipe it came off of, just a thought. Keep up the good work!

Re: 5th Find at the 18Th century farm. --SOLVED--

Hello Charlie,

Yes, I'm very sure you are correct with this being a pipe flange. About a hour after I posted this, it dawned on me as well that this could be what this is. Now the challenge for me is to try and date this piece. I'm not sure what the significance of this piece is to the overall dig, as it has to be fairly modern.

In any case, I appreciate your feedback on this.

Re: 5th Find at the 18Th century farm.(It's a Well Head Stuffing box component)

Wow irbaddadjoe,

I'm positive this is the correct answer, a "wellhead stuffing box". It just so happened that this item was found about 20 yards from a well I was hunting. It appears that this well has be cemented up for a very long time. Perhaps this was from around the time the work was done which I haven't a clue. Now I have to go and read about what a Wellhead stuffer box is and how it performs!.

Thanks again for your feedback on this.

Re: 5th Find at the 18Th century farm.

Rods went down in the well with a downhole pump . These rods were hooked to a pumpjack on surface. Rods went thru your piece that had rubber seals underneath that wrapped a polish rod to prevent fluid and gas from escaping thru the top. As the rubbers wore down you would tighten the two bolts on side to press them tighter to rods.
