5 Silver, 9 Wheats ~ "950" Ring ~ Platinum?? ~ 30 For 30!!

Hello My Friends,

I couldn't be more please with my detecting day this morning. I had to go back to the "silver park" that's producing for me. I honestly didn't know if I would find any silver coins today, but I was hoping I could eek out just one. I couldn't believe on my first two digs of the day I recovered a lawnmower chopped Rosie and then a beautiful '48S Washington just minutes later. After about an hour or so, I decided to try a different spot just minutes away. I was swinging my coil and saw three shiny coins laying in the grass. I knew one was a quarter and the other two were dimes. I couldn't believe that one of the dimes was a '63 Rosie. Pure luck, but that's the way it has been going for me with the silver...some days, it seems to be finding me! :laughing7: As I was detecting a small hillside, I could hear deeper coin targets mixed in with the trash. Five or six of the signals were 8-9" wheaties, and 1 was another silver coin, a '50 Rosie. As I was approaching a newly planted tree, I received a shallow quarter signal. Since I never pass up a quarter signal I decided to probe for the quarter, and was completely surprised when a big silver colored ring with a purple stone came out of the ground. The stamp in the inside says "950". That's a first for me...What do you all think? Maybe Platinum?? when I see numbers stamped on a piece of silver jewelry, I usually see .925. ??? It also looks very shiny.

Shortly after digging the ring, I decided to call it a day. It was certainly a day of surprises for me. And it was also my 30th consecutive turf hunt with my SE Pro Coil that I have dug at least 1 silver coin. Woooo Hooo! :occasion18: :occasion14: It has been an amazing 3 months with my SE Pro Coil. When will this silver magnet coil strike out? Not even I know that! :clock:

Thanks for looking!!
Good luck to everyone!
Keep The Passion High!!

Captn- SE , Greetings from Santa Fe, NM. I've been enjoying your posts for @ a year now , congrats

on all the silver , it is such an inspiration to my new MDing addiction. Regarding your ring , I can say

with some confidence that it is silver , I am a silversmith/jeweler and though i do not have expertise,

in the area of platinum, that ring screams silver - the color is the yummy soft white unique to silver.

Platinum has a slightly harder look more like nickel - with a grey - green cast . The stone selected for

your ring appears to be amethyst and in a cabachon cut , both factors common to silver settings . In

a platinum setting you could expect to see ruby, saphire , diamond ( precious stones ) and likely a

faceted cut. Finally i have dug at least one nice silver piece - a pendant - with the 950 mark. I purchased

another with the same mark , both are from mexico . Often if a jeweler cant access a jewelers supply

to purchase sterling silver sheet or wire stock , he or she will fabricate the required material by alloying

pure silver with the requisite copper to attain the desired alloy ( 50 parts per 1000 in this case) to get

your 950 designation . Sorry to be so long winded and clearly this is all just educated guesswork

on my part since I'm not actually holding the ring in question . Great find ! Argentium.

Nice finds and congrats on all that silver  If the ring is Plat it would be a low tone plat has low conductive properties Lower than Gold. sometimes plat can sound like bottle caps if it was a high tone more than likely it is silver still a nice find HH

Congrats Dan on another wonderfull day of detecting! I need to get out but its been so windy and I have been really tired from college. At least you are hunting for me and finding all of the silver! Keep up the hunting! I will be in spirit when you are hunting because I will be sitting in the classroom at Bellevue Community College learning and thinking about detecting as soon as I get the time! :) Nice job!

Nice job once again Dan. 30 and beyond now! That Quarter is brilliant. The ring is kick butt too. My Injun turned out to be the 3.11gram type. Not the fatty. But still a great find for me. Hope to get out friday morning for some turf hunting. Gotta start a new streak. I don't think yours will ever stop. You Da Man Danno! Keep that streak alive buddy. jgas

Marcus and Argentium,

Thank you very much for your insights on my ring.  I really am leaning toward silver now also. It's got the slight pitting that I'm used to seeing on silver jewelry, in addition, it sounded like a quarter on my SE, so it is very high conductivity, as silver is.

WTG Dan. Nice silver and cool ring.WTG.

Thanks, Bulgarian. Good luck out there!!

Thanks, Ron!! It is probably silver. The ring has very high conductivity.

Thanks, DF. Been wondering if you were detecting lately. Now I know you are busy at school. Hope you get a chance to get out there just for a couple hours or so. Sometimes that's all we need to get our fix.

Thanks, jgas!! Yeah, I couldn't believe I dug another nice quarter from the site I've been detecting. I've dug close to 6 there. I think that's all there is. I will try to extend the streak tomorrow. Same park, of course.

Awesome ring Capt,

Man the mower has consistently hit alot of silvers before they made it into the ground. You must have some nice thick sods in this park. Most of our parks are so worn down there is just dirt or very low grass.

I've had scores like that to. You know it's gonna be a good day when you have found 5 old coins before you even ground balance your unit.

Thanks, Jer. The chopped Rosie is actually the first chopped silver I have found in the section of the park I've been detecting at for the past 5 weeks or so. Other sections of this park I've hunted at back in May/June were full of chopped coins. The grass at this park is very uneven. Some areas are nice and green, while other areas are bone dry. It's all crab grass/weeds. I have allergies to this type of grass too. I get bumps on my arm/exposed knee(In Summer) from the grass rubbing on my skin. But, that has never kept me from what I love to do.

Totally great finds Dan :icon_jokercolor:, coins and a ring too! I found a ring marked 950 and it's silver, it's sort of soft and bends easy. The ring/band also has 5 or 6, 18k gold bb sized shots set into it (it's marked 18k 950).

Another silver plundering outing for the Captain. What a great spot this has been for you.I have a little spot that has given me a much more modest 10 for 10 with silver coins, but having my last hunt there my best yet at this spot with 6 silver coins,I'm hoping to extend that streak for awhile.I will say having an Explorer really helped in keeping that streak alive even though I'm a novice with this machine.HH

Thanks, Tom. Yeah, you have some very good parks over there. You and Ricardo are tearing it up. The Explorer is the key to "old coin" success. Keep up the great hunts!!

Dan,
Nice work, as usual. It seems so strange reading your posts from the East Coast rather than just down the road from you. It is bittersweet. Man, I'd love to hit some of those parks again with you. Keep up the good work and you always have an open invitation to hunt here in PA with me.
Take care,
Daryl
