Hey guys it's been a bit since our last post but I suppose the heat had something to do with that :icon_sunny: When it gets to be 110 degrees with the heat index I guess we had better slow down a bit :tongue3:

But we finally got back out to start on some pits that we had probed before the heat hit. We found a couple to do, but then ended up with 5 so far and at least 3 more to go. As you will see in the pics below most of these are around 4 feet deep. Mostly because the area around the pits are kinda collapsable. I think when they dug them they discovered that they could not go much deeper unless they shored them up really good. I am kinda glad they were only this deep ;D

So we started out finding some plates and pottery that were mostly broken. Found a nice cup that was intact and a few smaller bottles but nothing special. Moved on to the next and located some more smaller items. They mostly looked like possible 1890-1900 type items. Not super old but we were not done.

Moved on to the 3rd and 4th pits which really were nothing more than trash pits. No signs of actual privies. No seed layer, no buttons etc. Got down about a foot or so and hit a layer of the Fellows and Co. Chemist bottles and some Parkers Hair Balsom bottles. A few local druggist bottles and the usual plates and pottery.

Continued on to the 5th pit and found some of the same things. I think I found the door handle, the brass plate and lock to the privy. These are kinda cool. We usually find the door handles in the pits after they burn the wood and box down. We did manage a hock wine and an extract bottle, a ponds extract and a few other keepers. After this was done and all the sod replaced we decided to probe a bit more. We located what appears to be 2 deeper pits. Our six foot probe was buried all the way to the handle and we could not feel the bottom. But we did bring up some brick and some ash from 5 to 6 feet. So they may have some decent finds awaiting our next excavation. And the weather looks great for digging  Hope you enjoy all the pics. Until next time, happy hunting everyone :) jgas

Hey Ottawa, thanks for the reply....Well finding a pit is easier than it looks. But you have to have the right tools to do it. That starts with 6 foot spring steel probes. Shoving those into the ground a couple hundred thousand times :tongue3: not really! Just get the probes and start pushing them in the ground. The pits have a totally different feel than the surrounding dirt. It takes time but as you can see after digging several hundred pits you will get the hang of it  jgas
