The British 46th Regiment of foot was in New York During the Rev War. There are four styles of the 46th in "Insignia Of Independece", the best available reference on Rev War buttons, but none match yours. Yours looks French based on the face. However, the French 46th is not listed in this book. A picture of the back would be helpful.

Was the back photo sufficient?

I recently dug this button on eastern Long Island NY and believe it to be a British 46 regiment of foot button from the American Revolutionary War although many online resources have referred to similar buttons as French, Russian and Crimean. Any info would be appreciated greatly.
Nice!!!! Congrats!!!!

Yes. It is not a French style birdcage/turret shank. It may be a War of 1812 British button or an undocumented Rev War British button. You could try posting it on the Revolutionary War Buttons Facebook group.

Thank you for all your help. I do not have Facebook, would you be so kind to post it for me? I’d very much appreciate it. Also I came across this button British 20th regiment of foot which is quite similar

I will post it for you and get back to you when I get responses

I have posted your button on the Facebook forum and am waiting for a definitive answer. I mentioned on the FB post that the button appears to be later than Rev War based on how the shank was attached, which is more indicative of 1812/1820. So far at least one person agrees it is probably later than Rev War. Still waiting for some of the experts to chime in.

Thank you so much. It’s frustrating bc the 46 reg of foot was here in the US from 1750s-1790s for multiple campaigns but I cannot see them utilized at all during war of 1812 in the US.

Years ago I found a French 30th regiment button and Ironpatch and Crusader showed it documented that the 30th wasn’t here but people in other regiments were formerly from 30th and here. So it can get tricky.

Here’s what IP posted out of a book on 30th at time.
