Detector(s) used
WHITES 5900, MXT 300, MXT PRO, MXT ALL PRO/ 8X6 SEF COIL
Primary Interest:
Relic Hunting
I am having a problem with my mxt pro and I think this question has been asked before.I was hunting yesterday in relic mode got a nice signal non ferrous and when I brought it out the ground it was a piece of iron. This has happened a lot lately. The coil is a detech sef 8x6 coil .I have tried everything and makes no sense to whats going on.I have ask whites by email and never received a response, the mxt pro was traded to me for my mxt 300 that they could not fix.Out of there excellent customer care they sent me the mxt pro.I have had the detector sent back twice for similar problems and the detector was recalibrated and sent back to me.I have tried different coils and had the problem happen with them.I think I have a few months left on the warranty??? yet but I don't think I will have a new detector sent since they have done this already.Damn near sold it on ebay couple months ago for what ever I could have got very frustrated and now do not know what to do.Any suggestions? vanzutphen

Go to the Whites Forum and check around, and ask the question on that forum.

Already did.Nothing from whites or any reasonable explanation.vanzutphen

You will get non ferrous hits on iron with any detector. A nice pointy rusty nail or a big washer will ring up sweet sometimes, especially if they have been in the ground a long time and have a nice halo. It's all part of the fun. ;)

Yes RobRieman is right could be there is not a thing wrong with your detector..

For all that answer. I have hunted 2 different spots 4 miles between the 2 and never had that happen and hunted the first site for 2 years straight. As to the second sight this is where all this begun.Just aggravating because it seems constant .I sent the pro back and they said it needed to be recalibrated and sent it back.I miss my mxt 300 never had that problem.vanzutphen

Give tech support a call and they will make it right. Especially if it's still under warranty. I would try a different coil first though and see what it does. They don't guarantee their detectors to work with SEF coils but I run one on my V3i and it works great. Could be a coil going bad, you need to narrow it down a bit.

lost for words......................

Rob I have tried the whites coils also I have 3 plus the sef.Just cant figure out what is going on.I have sent emails to whites with no response. This will be the 3rd time going back and its getting expensive to ship. They said calibration was off last time and before that..Sometimes I wish that I had the mxt 300 before it went bad and they sent me the pro because could not fix the 300.I cant complain they sent me a new detector ,but what can i do.I really don't think they will send another one in its place.

So you get a nice high tone and you don't have iron discriminated out so you hear all iron tones as well???
If you are not listening to iron then that is your problem. All iron that has been in the ground a long time will produce a nice high silver tone.. along with the iron.. it is call a halo..
Read all about it here Halo.. why iron sounds like a quarter!

I can notch out iron and then some. Yet my mx5 still sounds off on it. I was told it is just part of the game? Size shape position all factors.

The point i was making is if you have nothing discriminated and listen to all of the sounds, you will hear iron tone just before or just after that high tone halo almost always. Always check around the high tone for larger iron signals.

Is the size of the iron larger than coin size? If so, hearing it is normal. Large trash will often give several IDs, depending on which part of the iron the coil goes over. DD coils may not be as good as concentrics for rejecting rusty iron. Is the iron you dig rusty?

It is cheaper to phone the factory (not the toll-free #) than to send it back over & over, & it will be harder to ignore a phone call than an e-mail. They might even let you talk to more than 1 person. Phone the factory & let us know how that goes. Best wishes, George (MN)
