42 degrees and 2" of frost, went out anyway, Match in the book

If you don't like the weather in New England wait a minute! Gorgeous day for January. Two inches of rain on Monday turned real icy, almost went on my noggin letting the dogs out. Yesterday the sun was pure, warm, not a cloud in the sky, I have to go out. Been a while between the weather and the holidays.

The first picture is an odd group of trees, it grows out of one stump, really has my curiosity peaked. No signals in or around it, yet signals everywhere else. Lots of history, legends, mysteries and Indian heritage around here. Hubby even thinks it's odd from memory he thinks its Maple or beech. I am thinking of cleaning the center from the dirt and leaves to see if I can get a signal. Worse case I have the guys chop it down, dig the stump out and I'll detect under it. What do you think worth the effort?

Had to swing some on the ways to my original location of where I think the trash dump is. The soil was so wet, pure black mud, I couldn't even feel a nail with gloves on. Took them off and froze my fingers. Still to thick for findings. Picture of the trail out to the dump, no luck in the muck.

Picture looking from the dump. i have found some unique relics there, a two pronged fork with a wooden handle (most of the handle Gone), a really old gutter hanger (Capt. Kidd's hook ;), remember?) a few other things. Not a lot of time, but got the half a spoon (hubby says it will be good for his diet) silver?, all the small unidentifiable rusted (OK it's all rust) pieces came out of the same hole, a large file. oh the bud can was closer to home, my brother in-laws I'm sure, gave heck for it anyways.

All in all it was a beautiful Day to get out, the story may be more fun than the finds, but an awesome sun shinny New England day. Supposed to be in the 60's for the weekend, I will be back out there, I'll let you know!

The last picture is for all my nail fans, told you we grow them big!

Don, Nash,
Had no Idea on the spoon, I am real excited to tell the hubby he can't use it for his diet, because it could be a soldiers spoon and it's going on display! I just ordered the book to prove it. I can't wait to get it, almost overnighted it, guess I can wait until the end of next week. Thanks for the info on the book. I have a ladel type thing I found, may have been used for melting lead, real heavy, bet it's in there.

Thanks, Glad to share the knowledge, it is the most enjoyable and most used book I have, next to a few button books. There is so much in the book it amazes me, once you go through, you'll say, "Oh, that's what that thingy was that I threw away" YIKES! :)

I am sure you will enjoy it, if you really like it, I would love hearing from you on that.

Don

Not bad for a day's walk.Lot's of keepers there, but just imagine what else is out there !!
Nice wooded area,I counted at least a dozen tree frogs in one picture.
If you find five pounds of aluminum nails, .............. I didn't do it ;D ::)

Re: 42 degrees and 2" of frost, went out anyway

Don, thanks so much for the lead on the book, came in last night! I absolutely LOVE it! Been through all 286 pages twice! I can even date some of my nails to 18th century. Can't wait to match things up with the book. I have a latch that I am almost positive came off a wagon jack. Will match things to the book this weekend and let you know. Well hubby it's not all junk! Wish the ground wasn't freezing up now! Can't wait to get back out there!

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Country Girl....I myself would have to check that place out...put it on the back burner if you have to.Thank's for the pic's...Best of luck to ya!!!!!

Re: 42 degrees and 2" of frost, went out anyway

I am sure there is some awesome stuff there, just have to get rid of the trash, so dig it all. If you guys could see the signals, I honestly don't think i can possibly dig it all myself, but I'll give it a whirl. New detector for spring, it may not help, but I know whats been found here without a detector. I should have pictures before the winter is over, I've been trying to get the owner of the finds to let me take pic's. It was awhile ago so they are trying to find them for me, packrats with a big house ;D. Let's at least hope for pictures of their finds.

Thanks folks!

Country Girl, I am so glad you love the book! I figured you would, anybody who finds Colonial era artifacts should consider buying that book. I also love the book, and my only wish was that the book was a bit more organized or should I say have a Table of Contents, Index, something!!. I spend more time looking for repeat stuff, that I know I saw in the book previously, than I think I should.
It is great for IDing some of the trigger guards I have found over the years and of course the buckles. May you find many more artifacts that are also listed in the book, Happy Hunting!

Don

Re: 42 degrees and 2" of frost, went out anyway

Don.
I agree that an Index would be helpful, but I enjoy looking through the pages again and again, so it's not a bother. I can't believe my Husband enjoys it as much as I do. He has a bench vise that he is sure is identical to the one in the book. I will match everything up with pictures this afternoon, may not get to post until tomarrow though. I wish I had gotten this years ago. Thanks again!

looks like a cold place to detect..

Is now, was almost 70 last weekend which was a record breaker. Was only in the teens a couple of mornings ago, 30's today, talking snow for the begining of the week. We are usually snowmobiling by now. Was nice to get out in Jan., 42 is really not cold if the sun is shinning! Have an awesome day!

Re: 42 degrees and 2" of frost, went out anyway

Sounds like you are not using a handheld pinpointer. Even in the muck you can find small targets if you use a handheld. Thats why I wouldn't be without one. If you were using one, never mind! ::) Monty

Re: 42 degrees and 2" of frost, went out anyway

Thanks Monty, I agree one hundred percent, when I get my new detector I will have a pin pointer. As a matter of fact I asked for one for X-mass, but my Birthday is in April and Gerry thought the ground would be frozen and said I would get it then. So don't tell him I am buying the Ace 250 for myself, he can get me the pinpointer. I tried Lara's when she was up and really liked it.

Would like some snow, but can't wait for spring so I can get back out there!

My usband actually loves the book, was looking through it, "Hey, I have one of theese in the garage!" Son of a gun exact match! The measurements are perfect, the end pieces top and bottom are exact, can't believe it. He found it in the Carriage house a coupke years ago when cleaniing it out. Won't bore you with a long story, just wow you with more pictures :o ;D!

Don, page 41 ;)
