41st of Foot Officer's button? updated cleaned photos

Does anyone know if this is an officer's button? It has quite a bit of silver left on it. I can't find any reference to this maker. Does anybody have any info? Would anybody chance cleaning this button with naval jelly or is it too scarce? I haven't done anything yet with the front but rinse it with water. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I thought you guys might like to see it cleaned up. Thanks for the input so far, it looks like this one is kinda scarce. Please let me know if anybody comes up with anything.

Re: 41st of Foot Officer's button?

Sorry I can't help you with ID'ing it, but that is one sweet button!

Congrats on an awesome find!

Re: 41st of Foot Officer's button?

I agree it's a 41st Regiment of Foot button... circa 1812.

There were a few different styles.  Below are some reenactment button examples.

The bottom word (back mark) is Dublin... where it was made. I can't find anything more on the maker either...

Very nice. I don't think I would use something like the jelly on it. Probably just dip a toothbrush in hydrogen peroxide and very lightly brush it to bring out the silver a bit. A quick rinse and leave alone. The silver looks like it will flake easy so be careful, and you might want to seal it at the point your content with how it looks. An early officer button is always a good find.

:icon_sunny:Nice 41st button. I wouldn't clean on it too much..........originality is better than having it look new :icon_sunny:

Agreed, this will not clean up much more than it is. So leave it. Agreed with the IDs above.

An online friend of mine dug this one shortly before his death in 2004. It was a favorite find.

The back looks like it has M Murphy among other things on it. Have you tried looking that up? Monty

Monty, I tried every American and European website i know, but couldn't find this backmark. I'm thinking it is one of the earliest 41st designs from when they arrived in Canada in 1799 or so but not sure. I can scarcely find a picture of any of the early designs, let alone this one. Seems odd that noone has this maker listed. I need to buy a good button book for future references. Any suggestions?

Probably more 1812-1814 than 1799 but doesn't mean the button can't date early.

Do you know what the D word is in the backmark? If not I can probably get that far.
