I know that UMC "union metallic catridge company" was a company that made ammunition in the mid to late 19 century. At the turn of the 20th century they became Rem-UMC when they where purchased by Remington. Not sure about the particulars of the round....maybe a flare? Honestly no idea. Cool find though.

That's what I'm thinking, it was a flare round. I know nothing about flare guns, so that's just a guess, but it's way to big for a shotgun
shell.

Is there more than one thread for this find? The reason that I ask is I really thought that I posted on this thread.

I don't believe that this is a punt gun shell, although it could be. I think it is a head from a "Yacht Cannon" or "Yacht Gun". Generally speaking, the largest "regular" shotshell that was readily advertised by UMC was 4ga (which this will be bigger), but UMC did advertise and sell "Yacht Cannon" empties for years. Here is a catalog page that shows both loaded and empty Yacht Cannon shells (1904 catalog). Notice the No. 2. It has a 1 5/8" diameter.

This is a great find!

IMG_0522.JPGWe have been lead to believe this is a 40mm Flare???? Size falls between the 2Ga Left and 3ga Right, shells pictured from my collection. Not a common find by any means. Hope this helps

I would think rather than a flare it's likely a shotshell base. However it would equal out to roughly a 1 gauge, and I'm not sure if anyone ever made a cartridge loaded punt gun. I'll have to do some research..... interesting find!

Found in Sussex Co. Delaware 5" deep Garrett 250. Looks like a big ass shotgun shell. Has paper debris on inside. Measures 40mm or 1 5/8". Case is 29mm or 1 1/8" tall. Thanks, i know you can id this for me!
I thought it might be one of those big shotguns they used to shoot down built up material in kilns so they didn't have to enter and bar it down by hand. Problem is most of them were only 8 gauge which are about .835 inch diameter. 40 mm is closer to 1 gauge as previously mentioned which is pretty close to 1.5 inch diameter. The M 79 grenade launcher used in Vietnam and which was later replaced by the M203 both use a 40mm round.
