I just had to make whatever feeble attempt to find another walker tonight to keep that "every 3 days" thing going....oh well, it wasn't to be. I managed 13 cents tonight. I got a 53-D rosie, 1916 and 57-D wheats, and a 1969 memorial penny. I'll spare you the misery of looking at a lowly silver roosevelt dime....just this once!

oh yeah....I got cold too......brrrr.

OK.......Can you spot it? I already tossed it in there. I cut all of my silver out of the little mylar and cardboard prisons and am filling my chest with "raw" treasure.

Very nice! I could top it if I cheated & took stuff from my coin collections, but I am not even close with detected coins. It's a very impressive display. I reciently acquired my Uncle's coin collection to add to my hoard. He has been collecting since 1963 & man is there a ton of good stuff. Litterally in excess of 150 pounds of coins. I am going to be cataloging for a couple of months.

Those are not all dug "find"s either. Only 4 of the halfs are ones I dug....but all of the quarters are dug....and maybe 5 of the dimes are ones I got in "lots" that I purchased....rest are dug. The silver dollars were likewise purchased. Makes no difference to me though, since those I have bought have been bought with clad that came from the ground. 85 dollars worth of crappy clad would just about fill this box....but what a waste that would be.

I just didn't want to take time to photgraph 13 cents.....and edit the photo....and publish the thing. Now, if it had been at least a merc....maybe. I already had this picture in my computer. I just posted it for guys who like pictures.

Actually....I will put silver in this box by any legal means. I have a guy locally who will give me 5 bucks each for walkers. I bought 10 on ebay for 31 dollars ppd....and will sell him 7 of them....and keep 3 for free. All's fair when you want to fill the chest.

Finding them is still the best.....they feel more like "free" coins than the 3 free ones I'll keep from my eBay buying and selling...even though those ones are just as "free".

That sounds like a deal I made...
I got a bunch of 40% silver halves from my local coin shop for $12.50 per roll and sold them on Ebay for $20 per roll. Then I went back to the coin shop and bought my 1916-D Mercury dime and all I had to add was about $100.00 of my dug clad money to the $400.00 I made off the halves. ;D

I'm sure there are better coins from an investment standpoint...but this is just a hobby for me. I'm just feeding my "inner child"...the one who loved "Treasure Island" and all that business. There's nothing of staggering value in my chest....I just want to have a bunch of it.....for fun.

I think every time I pop a silver coin out of the ground, that it has a chance of being a scarce one....and it's ususally not...but the potential is still there. There's a seated dime in that chest....an 1882-S...look that one up. It probably shouldn't be in there...but it's worn. No harm can come to it lying with a bunch of it's cronies.

Wow, I'm just mesmerized by that collection. I started in late July (heavy hunting starting in early September). Before I gave it up for the season, I've found one '43 merc, two gold rings (one with opal/diamonds) and a huge silver ring. I've been very close, but no other silver coins. I'm hoping the small amount of experience and winter research pays off in the Spring.

Good on ya!

Hi Gadget...

You and I started putting serious effort into it at about the same time this year. I'm an old timer who had a loooong vacation though...12 years. I only recently got back into it...and can't believe I had let it go for so long.

Keep swingin' that thing. You'll find more. Experience is the best teacher. Once you find a couple sites that produce....take a good look at them and try and figure out why....and try and find sites where similar conditions exist.

My sites date either from the late 1700s to mid 1800s (very, very rare) to the 1960s which are much more common. My area was originally settled around 1915 with just a handful of folks, so old stuff up here in Alaska is at a premium unless you know your local history. And I'm learning very quickly...

There have been periods of economic boom here...and the town was founded on the pottery industry. I aven't gone to any really old sites to look for coins from that period.

There wasa time when folks in coal country worked for scrip...and "owed their souls to the company store"...so there's a whole block of time where not many coins were to be had...let alone lost.

This place was roarin' in the 40's and the 50s....and that's the stuff I'm finding. I'm happy with that for now....and today's goal is to put the 80th silver coin since Oct 1st in my chest. Hopefully I'll find more than just one...but you never know...I could even get skunked....naaaah.

Congrats on the silver and nice display chest! HH, mike
