ONE Washington Inaugural button puts you in "Best Finds" territory. FOUR (plus the early large cents) puts you in some special stratosphere I can only dream about.

Wow.

No, let me rephrase that.

WOW.

Still not quite right.

WOW.

WOW

Re: 4 GW BUTTONS

Great finds. I am not surprised that you found multiple GW buttons. The were not everyday wear. The were often worn on a cape by inserting them through the fabric then running a ribbon of cloth through all of them, then tying a knot in each end of the cloth ribbon. If the ribbon broke often all of the bottons came off. Resulting in a multiple loss if not found immediately. An attempted robbery would would explain all if the items were fairly close.
Ah! history! Don,t you love it. ;)

Re: 4 GW BUTTONS

Just an update. The buttons were inspected by an expert in New York and are certified genuine. She told me that they were not worth as much as an un-dug example(understandably)but she said that many people she contacted to help determine the value wanted to know more details about where and how they were found. She did not tell me over the phone the value but said the paperwork should be here soon. I'll let everyone know as soon as I know. Below are a few more coins recovered from the area (another 1798 large cent, 1816 large cent, a 1809 half-cent found on site and a 180? large cent with a hole thru it found nearby,I posted that one earlier. That's all for now.MM2

Re: 4 GW BUTTONS — UPDATED!

Ok, the appraisal arrived today. They are appraised as follows. The 2 bottom buttons were valued at 500$-700$ each because of the broken shanks. The top right button (63 indentations-intact shank) appraised at 1000$-2000$.And the top left(49 indentations-intact shank) was appraised at 1500$-2200$. Appraised total of 3,500$-$5,600$! What do you think.Candidate for Western+Eastern? I am one very happy camper today! ;D ;D

Re: 4 GW BUTTONS -Appraisal Added

Congratulations, Mountainman! Definately a magazine article in the making! :)

Can I ask a dumb question? What do you mean by indentations?

Re: 4 GW BUTTONS -Appraisal Added

Not a dumb question at all Mona Lisa.On the outer edge of the button, the total number of dots(I can't think of another word) that circle the button.3 of the buttons have 63 of those dots and are more common and one has 49 which is scarce. The appraiser had more difficulty finding a price for that one.

Re: 4 GW BUTTONS -Appraisal Added

Re: 4 GW BUTTONS -Appraisal Added

All I can say is - IT DOESN'T GET MUCH BETTER THAN THAT! CONGRATULATIONS! WHAT A FANTASTIC SITE! WONDERFUL FINDS! By the way, how big is the area your searching?

Re: 4 GW BUTTONS -Appraisal Added

Thanks everyone. The area of the grove was about 40 ft wide by 20 ft deep on the side of a hill. There were no special features to set it apart from anything else in the woods.Directly in front is an opening in a stone wall.

Re: 4 GW BUTTONS -Appraisal Added

Great finds and great appraisals. You should get on Antiques Roadshow next time they are in your area!! What a fascinating bit (4 bits, plus the coins, LOL) of American history. Finding even one of those buttons would have made me ecstatic, but to find 4 of them in a small area is phenomenal. I tip my hat to you, and to GW -- our greatest president.

Re: 4 GW BUTTONS -Appraisal Added

Fantastic MM! I hereby predict that the appraisal is considerably low, assuming they are in a well advertised specialist auction. And assuming you decide to sell them.

I second the motion to get yourself on TV! ;D

Major Congrats again!

"She told me that they were not worth as much as an un-dug example(understandably)but she said that many people she contacted to help determine the value wanted to know more details about (where and how they were found)".
Yeah; I'll bet they want to know where they were found! I wouldn't say peep!
