Looks like it to me..but it looks to be shot from the back, couldnt go through someone and their buckle could it? maybe a grapeshot?

Definitely looks like it is mushroomed out. A shot through the lower back, and out through the buckle is easily possible, especially at close range.

those civil war era muzzleloaders could put some serious velocity behind a piece of lead. i would say it easiliy could have gone straight through someone like that. (poor soul).

It does look to have been shot. Interesting find TSGman! HH, Mike

Nice plate. It does look like it was shot. Would have been a critical injury. Those bullets they used were deadly. Maybe the plate stopped the bullet some.

Great find

Yea, definetly shot from the back of the plate...Maybe soemone used their belt plate as target practice?

I think it had a broken hook on the back and they used it for target practice. They may have took bets on it. As far as I know it was only a camp site.

Could it be tested for traces of a different kind of metal (bullet) embedded in the edges of the 'blast' area?

TSGMAN, No Matter how it Happened, Finding a Bullet Struck CW Belt Plate is as Rare as finding Chicken Teeth. Excellent Hunting. trk5capt...

Whats that old saying-third ones the charm
Great buckle-see if you can find the size ball that fits the hole
of the buckle for an idea. HHs

Looks like a bigger hole than a muskeball or minie, unless the bullet hit and jsut snapped it off, but that doesnt happen at high velocities...Looks the size of grapeshot, but since it wasnt a battle then it cant be that, maybe someone stabbed it with a pole or some tool? Or maybe multiple bullets were fired at one place? Or maybe if shot from long distance it would just snap a chunk off instead of going clean through.

It was rather common to use them as target practice when they broke as you said. Some of them that were used for bayonette practice as well. I have a plain-jane cartridge box plate that has about ten or twelve little triangle holes poked through it and a bunch of deep gouges where is was hit from an angle. First time I get back to Georgia, I'll snap some pics. ;)

time to rain on the parade maybe it was hit by a plow or other AG. machine?
