It may be made of tombac. Did it ring like silver or a pull tab? If it came up as junk it may be a tombac.

Nice dig for sure!

Its actually an 18th C Silver Cufflink (piece), you can tell by the squared off shank :icon_thumright:

(Makers marks are different from hallmarks) :icon_thumright:

Personalising a cufflink makes more sense than your buttons.

Its deffo silver =) its a bit big 2cm for a chufflink don't you think :icon_scratch:

on the large side but not out of the question.

Yes a chance, but might be hours of work.

I think you could narrow the date to late 18th C & someone with in-depth knowledge of silversmithing would recognise the initials. I don't have any books on early makers marks but I think they had to record them centrally, like registered trade marks, so I guess there must be a resource somewhere. Never really done any delving in this subject & have no contacts, so don't know where to start. :dontknow:

Ok mate might email a few websites see if I can any luck there

Update somebody just said that the maker is James rood 1700 to 1730. That's why there is a RO stamped

I'm confused, surely James Rood would use IR or JR, why RO? (unless he liked the first two letters of his Surname) Is there a link or resource the 'somebody' can give, maybe I can learn something here & bookmark it?
