Today before the rain I went to my secret location where I found a LC last Sunday. I was surprised to find my second ever large cent! Last week I never even saw a large cent and this week I have 2! I could not make out the date so I cleaned it a little but it's still hard to read. I think it is 1835. I also found an old 1903 dime (not sure what kind it is) and an 1892 V nickel. They both cleaned up with some steel wool and vinegar. I also found an old spoon. I walked along a creek looking for arrow heads and swinging my coil along the bank. I dug up this GA. KKK token by a swimming hole. I am not really sure what it is but it looks homemade. I cleaned it up a little with some steel wool. It is kind of eerie having this thing around. :icon_pirat:

Heres my thoughts on the KKK:

6 - probably referring to the 6th of May:

'Every Klan group, regardless of affiliation or approach, and every Klansman should observe May 6th each year. In 1915, Emperor and Imperial Wizard William Joseph Simmons decreed that May 6, 1866, shall be observed as the anniversary of the Klan.'

KKK - obivious what this means.

Also the GA could be Georgia:

'The second era of the Ku Klux Klan began in Georgia on Thanksgiving night in 1915.'

Does the 1915 date fit with the coin/token its made from?

Pretty sure this was a token to do with the years Celebrations & probably came from Georgia.

Damn it, just noticed the # before the 6. So its numbered as 6, so must be 1,2,3 etc handed to Clan members, still think it maybe Georgia.

Wooo-Hoooo Sky, I know you're excited! Congratulations! The silver dime is called a Barber dime, and they were made between 1892-1916. The KKK token looks to be 'mammy made' over a Peter Pipper Pizza token. Great finds, now go get more! Breezie

Mammy made?

LOL . . Mammy made is a Southern expression for something that was made at home and/or by a private individual and not professionally done by a company/machine etc.

RT is correct about not using steel wool. Valuable coins shouldn't be cleaned according to the 'experts.' Soaking them in soapy water to remove the dirt is okay, but anything abrasive may reduce the value. ;D Breezie
May? reduce..it surely will reduce value... I am wondering what they used to clean the large cent as the copper color looks like it is showing..which is never good on a dug copper coin...

I rubbed it a little with steel ,wool that's why you can see the copper.

Nice digs! The token is neat, never seen one like that before.

Ah HA! look at pictures 3 and 4 on this TN thread and you will see one like mine.

Looks like it was stamped over a real coin. Maybe it was a member badge something like miners used in the mines?

Notice it follows the same format.
# [insert number]
KKK
W.VA =West Virginia

Yours is GA, only state I can think of is Georgia

Nice finds Sky :icon_pirat: , your secret spot used to be , the Grand Wizards house :o

Youll need to hit a book store and get a redbook, It lists all US coins, about $12 bucks. yeah, steel wool is a no no, there are some helpful hints in the cleaning and preservation posts.

Thought your token was interesting, but the token it was made over didn't look very old so I did a Google search for "peter piper pizza the pizza people pick". I couldn't find a good close image of one of their tokens, but the one I did find looks like its the one you have. I then looked at their web site and under the "about us" it says they were founded in 1973 in Phoenix.

I'm no historian and only spent about 15 minutes in my search to find this info so take it for what it is worth. Looks like it is a token from the last 30 years or so and probably done by some modern redneck (don't be offended I live in and am 1/2 from the south!). Just thought I would pass on the info incase you were interested.

Na...I found the token well away from my secret spot. It was on the bank of a creek near an old swimming hole.

Thanks Jeff, I am a Yankee from Pittsburgh originally so don't worry about the redneck comment. I also did the same searches on Google and found the same info. That is why I posted on here, thought maybe someone could shed some light on the subject. :icon_pirat:

It absolutely means Georgia. I've seen those token before as I'm from Georgia. The second, and modern day Klan was reborn on top of Stone Mountain (the biggest solitary Granite rock in the world, its pretty amazing) in 1915.
