Today before the rain I went to my secret location where I found a LC last Sunday. I was surprised to find my second ever large cent! Last week I never even saw a large cent and this week I have 2! I could not make out the date so I cleaned it a little but it's still hard to read. I think it is 1835. I also found an old 1903 dime (not sure what kind it is) and an 1892 V nickel. They both cleaned up with some steel wool and vinegar. I also found an old spoon. I walked along a creek looking for arrow heads and swinging my coil along the bank. I dug up this GA. KKK token by a swimming hole. I am not really sure what it is but it looks homemade. I cleaned it up a little with some steel wool. It is kind of eerie having this thing around. :icon_pirat:

Wooo-Hoooo Sky, I know you're excited! Congratulations! The silver dime is called a Barber dime, and they were made between 1892-1916. The KKK token looks to be 'mammy made' over a Peter Pipper Pizza token. Great finds, now go get more! Breezie

Mammy made?

Fabulous finds SkyPirate, and you've now matched my total of Large Cent finds. I think the kkk token is especially interesting. One bit of advice if I may, I'm no expert but I hope you don't mind me suggesting that you not use steel wool or anything like it on your finds until you are positive that it isn't a rare coin or relic. You could sure scrub a lot of value off of a special find... just a suggestion. Congrats on your secret place and on all of those goodies, I bet there's more just waiting for you there, good luck!

LOL . . Mammy made is a Southern expression for something that was made at home and/or by a private individual and not professionally done by a company/machine etc.

RT is correct about not using steel wool. Valuable coins shouldn't be cleaned according to the 'experts.' Soaking them in soapy water to remove the dirt is okay, but anything abrasive may reduce the value. ;D Breezie

Great finds Skypirate. You have found the hot spot. I would pound it slow and easy. :icon_thumleft:

nice finds.and yeah eveyone beat me to the not using steel wool on old coins and potentially valueable items.

OK, but I did not know how to see the date so I just gave it a little rub. What about using a tooth brush?

Good finds 2 LC,s in a week :icon_thumleft: That KKK token is old history sad but true Good hunt Dd60

Nice digs! The token is neat, never seen one like that before.

Warm soapy water and a toothbrush (soft/medium bristles) is a good start. I would use the cleaning forum here to get the low-down on how to clean anything. Lots of knowlege there. But as they all say here, research any object you get before you go all in on cleaning. You may seriously devalue it by cleaning or over cleaning it. Safe bet is the soapy water route with a good clean water rinse and a soft towel to mat off the water (no rubbing of objects)! ::)

May? reduce..it surely will reduce value... I am wondering what they used to clean the large cent as the copper color looks like it is showing..which is never good on a dug copper coin...
