Got out for a few hours this afternoon to a spot close to home that I've hit hard with the V.

Still getting used to my new machine but was able to sniff out a few targets. A 2pc Eagle button, think I see Horseman on it.

Also snagged a 1pc flat button that looks to say Scoville on it.

The pc of crotal bell was about 6-7" deep.

What I'm finding is AT General goes deeper than the V ever did. I do need to customize a program for Cellar holes.

Merry Christmas my Friends!

Actually, its backmark says Horstmann, and it a 3-piece brass button, a.k.a. "Staff Officer" type. It was worn by officers whose rank was above Major.

Its depressed-lettering Horstmann backmark means your button's date-of-manufacture can be anytime from the 1850s to 1902, when this eagle emblem got replaced by the "Great Seal of the United States" on US Army buttons. If you want a narrowed-down date range, we need you to tell us EXACTLY what the rest of the backmark says, including any "punctation marks" or other symbols.

Thanks! I'll post them tomorrow. I can't read them but as the back popped off I'm able to get a better picture that I have to flip to read.

Everything I've pulled out of the site is either Colonial or Civil War period.

As promised here are the photos. Unfortunately, they are very hard to read but perhaps the trained eye will spot something to narrow the ID down.
