I hunted this site on Thursday morning though I could barely see this old house from the road as it was heavily over grown at the front of the property. The grass directly in front house was short enough to permit me to swing, so I decided to give it a go! I had to be careful on the far right side of the house as I could clearly see a swarm of bees flying in and out of an upstairs window sill. As you can see most of the coin finds where relatively modern, but I did get a couple of pennies from the 1930's & 40's. The silver dime was an interesting find at 8" deep and it's clearly been 'clipped', though it almost looks too clean to have been made by a lawnmower blade. :icon_scratch:

I can just make out the date of the dime as 1911.

Thanks for looking,
Dave

Thats a beautiful house and some great finds.

Sweet finds Dave ! Love the cut silver
Glen

Love them finds. Seems like old homesteads are great places to find great stuff. I look forward to finding better stuff besides nails and pulltabs. LOL.

Nice finds it always makes you wonder why a coin was clipped I've found a couple like that

Clipping coins used to be a somewhat common practice. You would divide a coin into say half or thirds if that was the anount needed.

Maybe clip enough coins, circulate them, save the clippings, melt 'em down, got a silver ingot and still used the coins! Guess old age makes a person think like that, lo!

Nice finds Dave, that is a beautifull old house, is it one of the ones that were suppose to be torn down for the road? There has to be alot more goodies in the ground there for sure.

Thanks Glen, I sure wish it had been complete though. :-\
Hope you and Carson dig some gold this weekend!

The 'good stuff' is out there Freeman, a lot the time it's just sunk too deep for our detector to hear it.
Thanks for your post and best of luck to you!

This is the first 'clipped' coin I've ever found, if only it had been a Spanish Silver!
I'm thinking an old style 'push type' lawn mower might've made this type of cut. :icon_scratch:

I know that was the practice 200 years ago, but I've never heard of it being done in the 20th century. :dontknow:

Interesting theory rlc!
I definitely think you're onto something when you say, "old age makes a person think like that'! :laughing7:
You must be talking from experience eh! lol!

Hey Dave! :hello:
This house is located north of the City of Toronto and sits well back from the main road. It's not one of the properties that's been expropriated for the 'toll highway' expansion, but for the widening of a main road. I feel there's more to find at this site as well, but with the detecting season here in 'The Great White North' quickly coming to an end and I need to hit as many new sites as possible in the time I have left! :laughing7:

Best of luck to you and Rick,
Dave

that's what would get your hands cut off in medieval England.

I've seen clean cut landmower coins like that one.

You seen to get the right locations & a few interesting finds, but you must be overdue a humdinger!

I definitely agree Cru! :laughing7:
But as you well know, patience is a virtue when it comes to detecting and sometimes we can go weeks without a decent find. My last "humdinger" was 3 weeks ago when I found the trade token and the Dandy button in my avatar. I found both of these at the same site on the same day, but the finds have been meager ever since. :dontknow:

Hope you and your father having a good year,
Dave

Liking the cut dime! Rather have a cut one than a whole one (of this date) any day as now it can be in a separate album/collection showing these types off with a bit of a story. Great looking Victorian era home, loving the porch stone work which makes it look very classy.

I agree about the porch looking "very classy". I took a few moments to look at the amount of detail in the stonework that when into building it. I could just imagine people laughing, drinking lemonade and enjoying sitting outside on a hot day like it was on Thursday.

Take care J and have another look for that digger! :laughing7:

nice coins ! ;)

Good work. Never found a cliped coin. As a kid when you get a pair of tin snips in hand you always got to put them to the test. I'm guessing that's what some of them are from. Who knows lol. Great finds I'm sure you will turn up some more goods from this property. Take your bee keepers outfit. : ) HH

Thanks Dave, Rick should be out at some new sites today but I am moving my daughter into her new place this weekend so I will have to be content with reading Rick's post and reveling in his victories.
I hope you are able to hit that 1888 house site again before winter. It sure looks like a dream hunting spot.

I hear you about the bees pug! When I was a kid I was stung over 20 times when I walked into a bees nest! :crybaby2: Over the past few years I've found lots of pennies chopped up by lawnmower blades, but never a silver dime.

Thanks for your post,
Dave

Yeah, Rick always pulls some decent keepers out of some very bad soil. I really love the silver ship's teaspoon he found earlier this summer, now that was a great find! :o I hope to get back to this spot again early next week, it sure would be nice if I could find the lost bit to the dime. Tomorrow morning I'll be hitting a local farm field that I got permission to hunt it yesterday!

Best of luck moving your daughter Dave!
