Went back to the roman field, that gave up some nice relics and a couple of coins, thats on my last post.
I was getting some roman coins and an nice big thick coin, and towards the end of the morning I got a small coin, looked like a small copper medieval coin, but strange looking.
Well I got home and started cleaning, and I put it on a forum to find out the origin, thinking it was going to be a 3 or 4 hundred years old...like many coins from this part of the world :read2:
OBOL OF MASSALIA minted in 400 BC !!! :headbang: :headbang:
http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/gaul/massalia/t.html
A little history: Massalia was founded by the Phoceans a greek colony, around the 600 BC, Phocea was an Ancient city on the Aegean Sea, northernmost of the Ionian cities on the western coast of Asia Minor (now the Gulf of Izmir, Turkey). An important maritime state c. 1000–550 BC, it founded a number of colonies, including MassAlia (Marseilles) in the western Mediterranean
My oldest and coolest coin so far, silver and from the GREEKS!!!
Also found a burned AS of BOLSKAN, 150 BC!!
And some very nice roman coins
Thanks for looking

Magnificent find! I do have to ask how you know which one it is that you found? There are a few on the website that have a very close resemblance and I was unable to find a distinguishing characteristic that would narrow yours down to the 400 B.C. coin (I look very closely at both sides of yours and could not find the date, 400 B.C., or a mint mark). Besides, how would they know it was "B.C." if Jesus hadn't been born yet? Seriously, there must be something your trained eye tells you it is that particular Obol of Massalia.

Whatever, it is a Banner vote from me!!

Roland, it's very easy to see my coin on the web page wildwinds, just look for Gaul, Massalia. On the head of the post you have the link. You can read OBOL. They know it's 400 BC because the are written records, it's part of history, which means that there are written texts. If not it would be called prehistory.
Thanks A lot for the vote!
Also thanks a lot to all the viewers!

Cheers

Utterly amazing and inspirational!! It gives the rest of us hope that our great finds are still just around the corner, over the next hill or hiding under a rock. Thanks for sharing and congrats!! Definitely gets a banner vote from me!

I don't know why this find hasn't made the BANNER FIND ??? 2400 years old and it's silver, too. This really deserves a spot on top folks. What does it take, MODS ??? Mine is in and hope all that reads this jumps in too.

Thanks a lot guys!!

I will keep going to that field, and yes looking back detecting here it IS paradise!!
