4 weeks from today I am leaving for Hot Springs in the black hills of south dakota. Then will go to TR NP in north dakota.
While hiking I plan to look for native artifacts and nugget shoot and pan a bit.
Any help with current laws or any suggestions will be appreciated.
I have been in the area before, however I was not into detecting then.
Sheesh I'll take restaurant reviews. Are bears or lions a concern in the area? Squatches I can handle.

Can't help at all Jeff Gordon.
But I have to say your trip sounds incredible! I hear there's gold in them hills!!
You know better than I, but post this in the "states" section. Also, AAA has many lists of restaurants, camp grounds, hotels, outfitters, ect.
Keep and post a trip journal. All here will surely be interested.

I talked to my kin out there...you'll have no squach problems just bring beer, lots of beer..:occasion14:

sure I know about online ratings, I was hoping for personal recommendations.
Well, let us say that a couple may want to hear it! May I embellish?

"bring" beer?
I was planning on trying out all the micro breweries out there

Safe travels my friend... never been up that way myself, someday soon I hope.

The Outlaw in Waterford City has some of the best food I've had. Watford is about 45 miles above the North part of the park and a neat little town. Was there a month ago detecting and had 100 per cent yes's door knocking. That's right every time we asked they said go for it.

bigfoot1 said " squach problems ". Hysterical!
Embellishments are expected.

I've only had trouble with the buffalo. Buy a bag of oatmeal cookies so the donkey's will leave you alone.
The top of some of those (Hills??) sparkle with rose quartz and mica but you probably know that. Lots of stuff in the badlands but it's probably protected.
I read a new cave was found near Wind Cave.
I'll be following you if not this year, next.

the buff in SD or the ones IN TR national park?
and what did you do? what do they recommend?
does bear spray work on buff?

HELLO! Bueller?

I'll take geocache clues there as well, anything for fun

Most of the buffalo are in Custer State Park and Wind Cave State Park. No bears there except at bear Country. I have always wanted to detect in Custer/Hill City area but you need to be sure not to detect in any areas that are state parks. Castle Peak near Hill City has free camp grounds and there is gold there. Canyon Lake Park in Rapid City would be nice too but not sure about the rules on detecting there. There are a lot of places where there are old mines that would be interesting. As for other wildlife to watch out for are mountain lions as they are every where in the state. I plan on going back there after I retire to do a lot of detecting as I know of many places to investigate. be sure to check out where you can legally detect but most of the people around there will most likely let you detect their private properties.

BTW DO NOT PISS OFF THE BUFFALO! I have seen what a buffalo or two can do to a car when mad, not pretty.

3 more weeks!

any black hillers on today?

ok kids, I'm back from vacation. found a couple things.
Question: if you find iron pyrite in a stream, is it supposed to be shiny like you see it in shops?
Am I correct to think that pyrite is magnetic?
will get pics this weekend
