duh...duh... DFX
I haven't been posting recently but that doesn't mean I haven't been out. Looks like lots of great finds lately by TNet members too!
The freakish warm weather (went over 60deg F today) has brought hunting opportunities where there should be none.
After starting a new career a little over a month ago, I was wondering when it would be appropriate to take off at lunch and go out and detect. Coming back a little over an hour later slightly dirty and sometimes excited about a dirty coin gets some folks wondering......they just don't understand
Last year I found my oldest coin in an area near where I worked (and now work right down the road from...perfect) and hunted at lunch a lot. It was a 1792 Hibernia 1/2 cent Copper....it remains my oldest coin. Last week as weather improved and the snow melted I went back there and noticed right away that a heavy thicket right near where I found the Hibernia had died down to near nothing, allowing access to an area practically untouched. Right near the end of my 45 minute hunt I got a deep whisper that only chirpped a few VDIs past the mid 40s. In these places I'll dig nearly anything with a positive VDI. It ended up being a very old button with some of the gold gilt still attached.
As it came from the ground

backside...Anyone see enough detail for an ID of any type..age?
DSCF1545.JPG
Today I went back and in just shortsleeves!..right away I got a great hit and from about 6" I pulled this silver plated buckle-thingie...it has incredible detail and overall is in great shape. Again..anyone care to venture what exactly it is? Too curved to be a beltbuckle...and too heavy duty

Then as I knew I had to leave..I went back to the exact spot where I pulled that Hibernia and about 8" away I got another deep whisper in DC. ...and NOTHING at all in AC. And trust me, I've got it cranked. A quick boot scrape and then a steady 44-47 VDI.
Out popped a dark disk
DSCF1569.JPG
Ended up after cleaning to be an 1819 LC in ok shape.

And now here's a picture of most of the finds from last year andthe recent two days for this small spot. In the grand scheme of things it isn't much..but to me it spells a story of one settler's early life in the Western Reserve. Silver thimbles, musketshot, asst buckles a few coins and sone great old buttons (see the War of 1812 NY Militia button?)

I think my new co-workers will get used to me ;)

Dan,

Awesome LC... And a great way to start 2008.

It's a shame that spot won't be there much longer.
But with the weather we are having now...Get back out there!!!

I have been working with the same people for 14 years, They still don't understand this Metal Detecting thing!

Good Luck

Dave.....

I know absolutely nothing about colonial shoe buckles. But it looks to me like one of those hair things. Has a stick that goes under the hair, the silver on top. Holds the pony tail. My sister used to use one. But of course a quick look up on the net doesn't get me a pic for example.
Love the LC!

That was my first thought too. Keeps the hair in a bun.

Dan,
First off let me say it's good to see a post from you again. Glad to hear the job job isn't interfering with you lunchtime detecting. I hate that too. ;D ;) I have a group at work that can't wait to see what I'll bring back next. I've gotten two guys hooked already, and they bought my old Tesoro's from me. ;D

Congrats on that LC. Yours is a LOT better than mine. I'm still working on getting a date off of it. :'(

On that button you found, I swear I saw one like that in this months issue of W&ET magazine. Maybe in the "Ask Mark Parker" section. Unfortunately I gave away my copy to a guy at work.
Perhaps someone else can check it out?
I'll keep looking though, because I know I saw that button pattern just recently somewhere.

On your buckle piece, I noticed that "V" design made out of small dashes right away. It looks a lot like the design in the arrowhead ring I dug up recently. What do you think? Here's a couple pictures and a link to my post:

You have a great assortment of neat finds. Great post!

OMG...what a gorgeous shoe buckle...and a few big pennies, too. Fantastic! 8)

I found a couple of brass buckles today as well, one I'm pretty sure is a shoe buckle, the other I don't know. both are solid brass. the round stock buckle had marks where the strap crossbar sat but the flat stock one has almost no marks at all.

WTG Dan.

That silver piece looks like part of a hair clip.

See you in April.

I've found one of those reed looking thigs too. Yours is in the left side of the picture. The metal band with holes in it. Have any idea what it is?

Fantastic shoe buckle! I'm with hollowpointred - are you sure it's silverplated? In the 10th picture, is the silver worn away in spots showing base metal or are those spots just tarnishing or dirt?

That reed is either a harmonica reed (common at old sites) or a section of reed from a foot pump organ or accordian.

I'm pretty sure it's plated. Several areas show what look like base metal under a plate. The backside also seems to be corroded and looks like copper.

Someone here (I think PBK) ID'd it. It was pretty clear...turkey eagle on the globe with Excelsior under it. NY Militia

I see the similarity, sure Doug. Herringbone patterns go way back and it seems the further back you go the more intricate the detail at the smaller scales on the work.

Like I said Neil...never stopped detecting...just stopped posting. I tried explaining it a while back...the way I feel about TNet and what it has become...but sometimes I just know some of you would like to see some cool old stuff.

Dan,

Stellar as always...

Congratulations on an outstanding hunt...

Way to go,

Thanks Nick...maybe someday we can get together for a hunt!

That is a very nice shoe buckle. I am no expert, but the heavier construction makes me wonder if it is not a late example, insofar as shoe buckles being used.

That is a very cool little assemblage you have there, and it looks a little early for Ohio. Not something you see everyday.

I am sure you already do, but maybe keep better records for this spot. Keep all of the recovered artifacts together. These really do tell about the lives of people in a wilderness.

Great finds!
Couldn't have said it better plehbah...the history is what gets me going. Now go have a nice cold IPA on me!

I went back yesterday at lunch again and dug a great old button. On the backside (missing the shank) are 13 stars. The front has a beautiful Poppy flower with crosshatched background and a nice border...all detail intact. I'll get a good pic of it and post it on this thread tonight.

Re: 2008 starts off right. Warm weather reopens an old spot. 1819 LC!

Nice post Dan. The LC was a great find. I didn't know any were being found in Ohio until I found my first (a 1829) last week in SW Ohio and now yours. Makes all the time hunting and finding only clad worthwhile doesn't it. :) :) :)

Re: 2008 starts off right. Warm weather reopens an old spot. 1819 LC!

Sweet finds Dan, love the old coin. You are pretty lucky to have those three boys to hunt with you. Keep diggin! Looks like the warm weather is history...its only 37 here in Michigan & temp. is going to retreat to the high teens & low 20's...they are talking about a couple inches of snow by Friday morning. Oh well, it was nice while it lasted.

I'm sure Mirage (Bob) will be thrilled to be called a "boy". That guy is as old as the hills.
But you're correct on being lucky to have great hunting partners. It makes the experience richer no doubt.
As to the weather....ehhh....it's Ohio

Re: 2008 starts off right. Two more old items-same area

Back detecting yet again....same spot...at lunch yesterday and today A bad storm last night left some on the area without power. The woods were muddier and it was maybe 40 degrees today(from the strange 60s the last few days). Aside from a handful of crusty old square nails and maybe a corner of an old suspender buckle I dug two targets that were both right at the clay layer (6-8")
First was this old button that has a nice field of stars on the back and a nicely bordered lined background with a Poppy at full bloom on the center. It has great detail still!

Today I went back again and dug a great old ring. Copper with a diamond design engraved into the sides of the band. Under a loupe there might be a trace of gold gilting. Maybe it was the farmsteader's ring?

As I took those pictures I was looking down at the l819 large cent...picked it up and admired it's heft. I reached over, grabbed a Walker from a nearby glass, grabbed a quarter from the same glass and held them together to compare their relative diameters and admire them

Coins used to be so beautiful.

Great post and fantastic finds Danimal very nice, wtg.

I don't know but it looks kind of like half of a bracelet with the ceramic broke out of the middle.

Those are great Dan.
That ring is so pretty in its simplicity.
Makes you wonder who wore it, how they lost it.
Cool isn't it to hold history in your hand and wonder who it belonged to, how it was lost, what part it played in someone's life?
And you are correct coins used to be truly beautiful. Wonder if the folks who carried them back then realized how pretty they were?
As usual, your pictures are stunning.

Thanks Becky.
Knowing that there are more personal items still in the ground there is kind of exciting. I thought the spot was played out after pounding it so hard last year...but you never know. The area that is huntable now because of the thicket dying down was probably the cleared, farmed area and the area that is now old growth forest (which is where most of the finds were last year) was probably forest back then too. Some of the old oaks are pretty large.
Next step will be getting a brush hog back in there ::)
