Re: 20 year old what iis it

I don't know what it is but great find.
Is it silver?
Might be some kind of hunting pin, badge or emblem.

Can we see a photo of the back of the item too?

Me thinks we shall never know, but my best guess is it's a Kilt Pin.  Every chance it's a family's hallmark or clan crest.

That's what I saw also! On the sword I believe I see a stamp? Maybe... USA

Here is the back.

It is not silver. Brass or bronze maybe. Stamped and very sturdy.

There is no writing of any kind on it.

Have had a lot of guesses over the years but nothing pans out. Best so far has been a European origin and maybe a hunting club pin. Anyone form Europe out there who might have a little more knowledge?

Where was it found? Maybe there was a club or school close by that used that for its mascot or some type of insignia.

Well...it looks like it was lead backed at one time. Any chance that it could be some sort of a box pin of some sort--maybe for a hunting rifle?

Looks a bit like an anteater or aardvark with that nose

The cap badge, also called the clansman's crest badge, is worn on the left side of the bonnet. In the middle is the crest, or top, of the clan Chief's coat of arms. Around the circle is the Chief's motto, with a buckle and strap.
The cap badge that may be worn by all Campbells includes a crest that is a boar's head, with the Chief's motto, Ne Obliviscaris, on the strap.

Thanks for all the replies.

The material that partially backfills it is not lead. I am not sure exactly what it is but definitely not lead. It's a hard substance. Your guess is a possibility but the question remains as to what it represents. From it's manufacture it was definitely not a one of a kind. There has to be more out there somewhere.

As to there being anything local that it could attribute to I do not think so. it is not connected to the any area school that I am aware of. I suppose it is possible that there could have been some kind of organization or club at that time but the fact that I have never seen anything like it in the local histories would lead me to think otherwise.

Which post was that link for. It takes me to one of the boards and not to a specific post.

This ones a real puzzle (always fun though) Personally I don't think its a Clan Crest badge - all the ones I've come across in my research have an outer circle around the whole badge and a motto whereas this mystery badge has neither. A boar head is a common heraldic symbol representing courage and fierceness in battle and has been used by civilisations all over the world.

Right you are about the Kitl Pins Harry... all round for the Scots, but I thought the Irish had swords and daggers and suck as part or thier heraldry. Regardless, as soon as I saw the back I knew it was'nt a kilt pin.

I think the Boars "head" also means "Hospitality". ?
