'20 wheatie at the swim hole

The old swim hole dried up on silver. Found a 1920 wheatie and later had put it in my pocket with some other change. Went fishing in there for it and found a 1941 wheatie in the change. Go figure. I had someone tell me they got a Merc. dime in change a while back. That's never happened to me. Anyone else?

Beleive it or not I have found a merc in my change once. It was a 1927 I think. VERY worn though, so I just melted it down to add to my silver nugget. Definition of my silver nugget: a pile of silver that I made from silver coinage that is too worn to have any numismatic value and I constantly add to it every once in a while.

Re: '20 wheatie at the swim hole

In a couple of years as a cashier, I got two mercs. ?One was in great shape, the other was in very poor shape. ?There are plenty of old coins to be found as a cashier, but it is very rare to get anything good as a consumer.... ? I used to look thru hundreds and hundreds of coins every day, whereas a normal consumer probably only get a small handful.

In normal changes over the years I have gotten plenty of wheats, a silver roos, and two or three silver nickels.

As a cashier I have gotten: 3 silver quarters, a whole roll of silver/silver clad Kennedy halfs, a dozen or so silver roosies, 2 mercs, 4 or 5 buffs, 6 or 7 silver nickels, many, many wheats (nearly one a day) a couple more silver halfs, and what appears to be a silver 2000 Maryland P state quarter!!!

i used to find wheaties in my change quite often, but they have seemed to have dried up over the last year or two. i dont see them very much anymore. i have found 2 1964 washington quarters in my change.and maybe a silver roosevelt or two.

Re: '20 wheatie at the swim hole

my wife was working the teller window at the bank and a guy came in and wanted to exchange 5 silver dollars for a 5 dollar bill - she got the silver dollars for me. my daughter works at the IGA and said she sees merc dimes every now and than but thought they were canadian. I told her to get them for me when you see them.

Re: '20 wheatie at the swim hole

Well, Bergie, I'm hoping that swim hole isn't "completely" dried out. I'm thinking we're gonna come across the "pot of gold" when we get under the water in a few weeks and dredge the area. I'm excited and sure we'll have a great time.

Re: '20 wheatie at the swim hole

I have gotten quite a few whaties in change over the years, a few silver Rosies, and 2 Mercs. Have never found a silver nickel, though. You know what else I haven't seen in change in a long time, one of those 1976 Bicentennial Quarters with the drummer boy on back. That's a nice looking coin, and now that I think about it, you just don't see many any more. Have they gottten scarce without me noticing? Anyone else notice them showing up less and less, or is it just me?

Re: '20 wheatie at the swim hole

Congrats on the two wheaties and maybe the silver hasn't dried up. I got a merc dime just last week in change from Wal-mart. My first time, but I do get a wheat ever so often. HH

When I say "over the years" it really hasn't been all that long...I am 28.

Funny about the Bicentennials....it got one almost every day when I was a cashier, this was about 3 months ago.

Re: '20 wheatie at the swim hole

i get a few wheaties and silver nickeles at the bank almost weekly. ive known the girls there for some time and they keep them for me. the bicentennial quarters are harder to get here, but i do get one from time to time and it goes into my safe. keep on digging !!!

Re: '20 wheatie at the swim hole

Like to find tho;s wheats Bergie,Never got a merc,in change, but in the last six months or so I have been getting alot of pre-1964 change. dimes, nickles and wheats.Must be more kids getting into some home banks or coin collections. That dime or 50 cents does not by the candy that it did when most of us was kids.Early 60's my little brother and I would walk to the store with a paper polk and pick up soda bottles on the way and by the time we were to the store have a couple bucks and walk away with a bag of candy and a RC & MOONPIE.THO'S WERE THE DAYS.
