Out for a early hunt today.

Lotsa musket balls once again.

But the highlite of this hunt is my buttons !!!

Found the button with RP and CROWN on it early in my hunt ..but didn,t see anything on it until I got home and cleand it up...boy was i surprised.

Found the 75 button at the end of my hunt.... I have seen another one just like it on here somewhere but can,t find it.

I,m assuming they are from the 1700s... |?????????????

Any information on thes buttons would be appreciated.

TYVM for the BANNER vote ... muchly appreciated.

As Rick said--- it must be the water that kept them in such great shape.

I,m gettin ready to seal the edges now.... soaked em in fresh water to get rid of the salt.

Fresh water for sure, salt water maybe but hard to know the exact story. If there's a bank that has erosion they could have washed out not too long ago and buttons very deep, like in a cellar hole can be in awesome condition. So it's very possible they were actually better before they ended up in the salt water.

The RP might be from the Kings Carolina Rangers, many of which were evacuated from Charleston, SC to Nova Scotia.

KCR is one of dozens of units that probably wore such buttons, unless you got a name on a map or on a later militia muster roll, that put a member of that regiment settling as a Loyalist in NS you couldn't really attribute that button to such, research may narrow whose button it was but the 57th would be the first list to look

Here is my best pewter & one I may never better. I love it, & I think the longer you detect, the more you will appreciate how great yours are. I hope you get more like it, but if you do, you are very privileged, because they are very rare in that state!

Similar period British Army, but mine is the 43rd Reg of Foot circa 1775-84. The leading US expert, said that he only knew of 1 other specimen as nice as this one & it's probably an $800 button. Not that I'm selling it either, but nice to know.

Most people will never recover one of those examples in that condition. To me the monetary value of a piece like that means absolutely nothing. To have a piece of such an important piece of history you can't put a price on. I would take that over a big expensive new piece of jewelry ANY day. Awesome

Thats an impressive price for a button !!!!

And yes, I like to know what things are worth also..but actually it is irrelevant as not selling unless get duplicates.

Duplicates or if it's worth much more. That plan of selling only doubles usually works until someone is willing to put four figures in your hand. :) I've actually been in that position more than I would have ever expected and sometimes the right choice was to keep the find, and others it was to sell. At least now after so many years it's usually an easy choice, and if it's not I just keep it... and of course once I have it all figured out the higher dollar finds stop. :)

A banner call isn't made by the finder, it is made by the others that click on your post and pull the trigger on whether or not it goes up by voting on it, but only after the mods get the votes and give it a check mark
Making a banner is a tough gig, getting the right find is also a tough gig, getting both , now you've got something!

ty Ahab.... I,m starting to see that these kinda finds are much more exciting than anything else I found last year.... all about location i guess.

I got a few very nice display pieces in my livingroom now.... and guess what... they are all from history of 200-300 years ago.

Yeah I think they're awesome man. I'm loving them and wish I could get into some of those old awesome buttons!

Yes that is definitely the big challenge. I'm considering a good water machine for one or two sites specifically. There's a site close to me that dates to 1607 and it was on a beach area. The thought of pulling something out from that colony has me seriously considering dropping some cash on a great water hunter. Before I do that I think I will thoroughly detect the dunes area at the back of the sand line. Everyone hunts that beach, nobody hunts the dunes. Maybe something is hiding in there.
I hope you find a similar site buddy. Amazingly it seems there's always another great site hiding somewhere out there. Make sure you don't leave one beep at your current site. You could literally find a one of a kind item there. I'll be waiting for that that post :-)

Perfect. For years I have complained not enough HISTORY was being saved. Yes... relics are saved here but with posts like this one history is saved too. Good job and just think this guy's detecting spot wasn't compromised either.

Hello AQUA,

I'm thinking that 57 button is of the 57Th Regiment of Foot. The following is from a larger piece on the 57th Regiments actions in the American Revolutionary War:

"57th Regiment - Nova Scotia - 1783-1791

At the conclusion of the war the 57th Regiment, reduced to eight companies, was assigned to Nova Scotia where British Loyalists from New York were deported in 1783. Some Loyalists returned to the New York from Canada area in later years.

The 1783, 57th Regiment of Foot roster, shows that Policarpus William Taylor had mustered out, and therefore did not participate in the assignment of the 57th to Nova Scotia.

The 57th was stationed in Nova Scotia for eight years until 1791. The 57th was reduced by October 1791 to eighteen officers and one hundred sixty men, due to drafts to other regiments. The regiment arrived in Portsmouth, England, November 14, 1791 from Halifax.
The composition of the 57th upon return to Portsmouth included over fifty percent Irishmen…" 57th Regiment of Foot

In many cases the only thing that hides in the dunes is a large fine. :) I know they are protected here.

Hey IP, I asked the ranger there and only one small section is protected. At least that's what I was told. But these are the same rangers that told me conflicting boundaries for the actual park area. So I appreciate the heads up and I will def try to find out for sure what's ok and what's not!
