Too bad they all suck. :-\ So when is the last time you dug 18 coppers and had most of the day remaining to hunt, but left the site? ;D This would have been one heck of a post if two things would have been different. The first is the condition, and the second is if our site wasn't a dump area for modern trash. The place is freakin loaded with coins but it's such a pain to deal with the trash, and add in how toast they are and it's close to not even being worth it. If this site had been our typical farm field with no modern trash I know for certain I would be posting 40+ large coppers. It started out finding a couple of strays but couldn't locate the site, and I actually gave the 5 minute warning! Right after doing so I hit a coin, then we went higher in the field and I dug 5 more in about ten minutes. That was just outside the main site and easy to pick them, but that changed when dealing with the concentration (Iron and modern trash). It was still lots of fun and I have to go back to 2002 for a day that I dug more coppers. Had we stayed I'm pretty sure I would have hit 29 to beat my highest total but we just weren't into it.

PS.... When you go on a hunt with someone named "Lucky Lee" and he has an idea for an old tavern site.... YOU GO!!! :laughing7:

Whoop-pee-woo, a guy named Iron Patch and Lucky Lee stumble onto a tavern site. :laughing9: Whoop-pee-woo, a guy named Iron Patch digs 20 coppers in one and doesn't say what they are (Tiffin, Nova Scotia token, Halfpenny copper token, etc.). :laughing7: Whoop-pee-woo. :laughing7:

Enlighten us, dear buddy Patch, how old are these coppers? I know Canada minted large coppers up until the 1880s? :laughing9: :dontknow:

Show me some Georgies, Patch. :headbang: Okay, I have to admit, you are off the skunk bus and I am still sitting in the back with my thumb in mouth. :binkybaby:

Kirk :headbang:

1 George II, 1 1812, 1 1820 & about 15 1815. Then from two different sites an early 1800s Spanish, and George III.

....and we most definitely did not stumble on to that site! He told me his reasearch, I told him what ground I had covered close to there, and since the tavern seemed to be higher in the field it was worth checking out. The only thing that was a little off was we were expecting it a little earlier as indicated by the history of the area, which is what he was using for research.

IP on a single day = 20 large coppers.

KKC for 2010 = ? :icon_scratch: ;D

Not bad at all :notworthy:

Amazing hunt IP. I'm surprised that no silver turned up. Just the thought of the silver would motivate me to clean the place out on my next trips!

Almost every copper is the same so I'm not sure if the odds of silver will be any better at this site compared to our usual ones. But I think we will clean it out anyway and see what turns up.

It was probably a tavern in the 1820s. You are saying that you have done this field, but never found the site? :laughing9: :laughing7:

Dang, that has to hurt the heart to dig that many "slug" coppers...but I can at least see the bust of King George II on one of them so maybe there not all slugs. Great attempt on your part....you can't help the soil was harsh on the coppers :dontknow: That's still a Nice handful of coppers! :icon_thumleft: :icon_thumleft: :icon_thumleft: :icon_thumleft:

eh, junky coppers like that, you'd be better off spending your time digging the beer cans for deposit. >:D

The animal has been unleased!!! :hello2:

No, you should read again!

Those 1815 coins date later so closer to a mid 1800s Tavern... maybe. It's hard to say for certain that's what it was because eventhough it is in the right location, the age is very off. Regardless it was some coppers to dig so was nice coming off a morning with little results.

I can see detail on many, they're just not pretty. What makes it a little worse is the coin the site is loaded with is typically thin and poorly struck and books for $20+ in VG. Sure would be great if every copper was a $20 bill!

Those ain't too pretty either!

I still can't in my heart, fully empathize with your plight. Out here, our coppers tend to be plated, consisting primarily of zinc. And a lot smaller.
I've dug less pulltabs in a detecting outing.
Kudos!

With some effort the silver might show :icon_thumright:

Just the fact you found so many and can at least recognize what varieties they are is incredible to me . I'm betting that you will pick up a few nice ones on your future trips there .
In all my years of detecting here in the bay area I have only found one large copper coin that may be a large cent talk about thin and pitted . :( A recognizable large cent is one of my big goals .
Nice work Iron !! :headbang:

H H ,
George

Poorly highlited New York quarter put in for size comparison.Copper coin is about half the thickness .

You found 20 large coppers in one day and you don't even care. I don't want to hear that you are still having an average year, because that is not average here in the USA.

 woo hoo great show old man!Modern trash huh,I can dig it.NOw if only you had patience to dig among trash you'll be laughing. But really them cans can throw you off some :tongue3:Remember it was a pull tab I told ya!

My best days are.... 28, 20, 15 & 11, but if you look at my average over every hunt I've ever done I don't think it would be a very high total. I have a lot of coppers, but have also done a lot of hunts! I will admit that I don't really care about yesterday, otherwise we wouldn't have left before 3pm and we were going to hunt until 8pm at the earliest. In hind site I would have had more to post had we stayed, but I like to roll the dice!

I'll go back but not until early next Spring when the grass is really beat down. I'll also take a trash can and put it in the middle of the site to throw all the crap in.

Well stated, brother. :icon_thumleft: In the US of A, if one digs 20 coppers in one day, you are on top of your game. In Canada, I'd rather a soap opera than 20 coppers. :icon_scratch: ;D

Very confusing. Don in SJ is probably thinking the same thing. :icon_scratch:
