Found this belt buckle part with 19 stars going around the eagle with shield. Can anyone identify the era it was made, interesting thing to me is it has only 19 stars representing the 6 states that were added after the first 13 colonies.

any identification would help, thanks!

There are some with 19 stars here, he says 1840s-1860s.

I find this part interesting based on your location in California: "These light "sash" militia buckles were available for purchase generally from the 1840's to 1860's. Militia units would buy them for ceremonial use, they were typically very light stampings capable of holding a light cloth sash only. Individuals could also buy them for personal use and a good many have become recovered from the California gold mining camps. However they are also found commonly in camp sites and trash dumps in the east."

The P1894 looks pretty close..perhaps yours is a broken piece from something similar?

Grasshopper,

Interesting history..thank you for the information on this eagle...it was found in the goldfields and there are known militias that were in the area during those years dealing with the Natives. The stories behind these relics are interesting, as its fun digging them up.

Relichunter,
I can't tell if your buckle tongue stamped or cast.
There is a stamped one listed in California Gold Rush Belt Buckles by Max Bell on pages 69 & 70.
I did my best to take pictures for those that don't have access to the book.

HuntingDog,

Thank you very much for the information, I think you hit it right on! Mine is stamped, has 7 tail feathers and 19 stars. The books description fits my example right on. Are these books available to purchase , seems like a great resource for us hunters.
