$2 Photo of Billy the Kid Worth $5 Million

thats a great story! i always liked billy the kid...i think young guns got me into it when i was real young! thats a great find though!

Assets are only worth what somebody is willing to pay for them. Great find. Billy was one ugly man. It must had been hard for him to find dates.

I live for these types of news stories... in my opinion this ferrotype being found was the most exciting thing to come across the news since they found that Winchester Model 1873 last November in Great Basin National Park, and before that the possible discovery of the remains of Republic-era Texas Ranger James Coryell back in February 2011.

In regards to the dude being an ugly hombre:

When interviewed by journalists Walter Noble Burns - Lucien Bonaparte Maxwell's daughter, Pauline Jaramillo stated both that she never cared for the way the CDV image captured him, as she felt it did him no justice... And she went so far as to add that while -she- was never enamored with him, she did state in her own words the Victorian-era equivalant of "He had the chicks lining up for him".

Her sentiment is very apparent as you read through the interview transcript... I feel as if she downplayed her actual feelings to fall within the acceptable range of morality at that time, suiting both her gender role (as a married woman) and the era's regional/societal norms (a predominately Hispanic population with the traditional values of the "old country" ) In short, maybe she was censoring herself as a married, wholesome woman so as to appease a possessive husband...?

Regardless, I agree - the original image is perhaps NOT flattering to someone who would be solely remembered as William Henry McCarty Jr...

But it's 100% accurate in representing "The Kid" for what he IS remembered for... a (legendary) awkward youngster who had a rough upbringing and maybe didn't feel like he belonged anywhere in particular... so he ran away, and at some point fell in with a faction that made him feel that being "pals" was strong enough medicine to live fast and die young for moral beliefs. Everything recorded about McCarty is biased/skewed one way or the other and contradicts everything else.... but they all seem to support the common belief that he was extremely confident and very confrontational.

His legacy is also another perfect example of the fact that there is a very fine line between being remembered as a revolutionary, or forever loathed as a militant extremist - depending solely on which party you align yourself with.

I watched the special they did on National Geographic Channel about this the other night, very interesting show. It was interesting seeing what all they had to do to authenticate the photo. The guy and his wife who found it really believed in what he had, spent a lot of time and money doing it but discovered an almost lost piece of history
