The first Wheat Field was the Roman Site we had been waiting to beat the night hawk on. It started well with Dads first dig being his best Roman Coin & our best dug from ploughed land We then struggled for hours to finally make 8 coins. This site has been hit hard after it was drilled with seed, so with the stubble, its the first battle to the Hawker. It will be the only time he will be up
So after narrowing down where the site was, we moved to another Wheat field by an old church, we were hoping this wasn't hit too hard as well. Thankfully its right along people gardens, so we have made some new spy friends This field was littered with roofing lead, so much so, it was hard for us to carry it all. Had a few interesting things:
Barrell Tap
Massive Lead Seal It has a man (prince maybe) with big frogs legs on one side & a Dress & arm showing where the 'Princess' was. Coutermarked several times & even scratched with 'SE' - what & why
Early Fishscale Crotal Bell
2 Jettons
1 Royal Farthing
My first complete Tudor Book Mount - lovely patina & rose design
2 possible Pilgrims Badges, needs more research, I'm sure I've seen those Lead Stars in a book of mine...
With some effort & lots of digging, the signs are good for Hammered...
7.5 hours, so a 17.5 hours digging weekend (& I forgot how much I hate Wheat stubble)
