I went for a short hunt this morning while my wife was working and I got a King George copper that I posted earlier.
http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,78631.0.html

After my wife finished work She wanted to detect for a short time this afternoon (I did Too), So we went back to the same spot that has been producing so well for us and Markg and TnT2000, And after about 1/2 hour my wife said she got something but did't know what it was. I went and looked at it, and got the book out of the truck and realized it was a New Jersey Copper Wide Shield, they were made from 1786 to 1788. After going back to hunting about 15 minutes later my wife calls me on the walkie talkie and says "your not going to believe this but I just got another Big Coin". MarkG and I walked over to where she was and I couldn't believe my eyes. A 1796 Liberty Cap Large cent. We all started pounding that area and about 5 minutes later I got a dime signal at 4" and it was a 2000 dime. I rescaned the hole and got a great quarter signal and dug again and out came another New Jersey Copper with the narrow shield. I can't believe the coins that we have been pulling out of this site. And a Special thanks to MarkG and TnT for telling us about this spot.
Thanks for looking
Ken And Linda

WTG Ken and Linda, I still am doing the NJ distribution study survey, so PM me please with the county/state found in, and if the pics are good enough I can attribute the exact variety for them, don't go by the Red Book generalizations. There are many, many varieties....

But, geesh, the soil is tough there........

Ken, I did attribute (Identify the variety) of both of the NJ colonials, and they are considered colonials and not post colonials :) REF: Join the C-4 group and increase your knowledge! (Colonial Coin Collectors Club)

The 1786 is a Maris 17-b variety Rarity 2, which is Common.

The 1787 is a Maris 48-g variety Rarity 1, which is Very Common.

I will look at your 1796 tomorrow and try and attribute that variety for you.

I did have my attributions verified by one of the top Colonial collectors in the country, but really your coins were fairly easy to ID thank to the amount of detail left on them.

The wife sounds like a heck of a hunter. I found a 1787 last yr. Alot of excitment finding coins like those.

Congrats on those colonial coppers. I hope to break the 1700 mark soon on a coin. FOund other items which I believe are that era but a coin would be sweet!
