What an awesome way to start the bottle diving season. Five of us got out this morning before the fowl weather hit to kick off the bottle diving season and we weren't disappointed.
The wind was calm and the sun was peaking through the clouds helping out with the visibility. At the first of the dive I felt something tugging on my buoy line and when I surfaced my tender told me a young seal was playing with my buoy and line.
A few nice milks, a 3 piece mold black and a free blown dip mold bottle, lots of clay pipes, two crocks and a piece from a bag pipe, plus some other goodies:headbang:.
Group shot of all the finds. (Cick on the pic and then click again to enlarge)

My finds including a completely intact McDougall clay pipe from Glascow Scotland.

John's intact clay pipe, and his crock ink well along with some other finds of his. The piece in the lower left corner is from a bag pipe.

Gille's beautiful navy bowl.

Zodiac,
great finds! I think that piece of bagpipe must have been from my great great grandfather who was a McB*****. :)
The clay smoking pipes are GREAT! the inkwell and the pottery bottle is super great also, as is the navy cup.

go out in a Zodiac boat? Same boat that Cousteau made famous. You must be a great diver to go in that cold water.
Thanks for the nice comments there Tex. The Zodiac is a fantastic dive platform. they hold a ton of weight and are very easy to launch and recover.

You had. A good! Congrats!

Thank's BeebBeep, we usually dive on Sundays, weather permitting so I will post up all our finds this year when we get out.
We have been doing this for decades and it still amazes me how much history is still down there. Places like Boston Harbor and the New York most be insanely loaded because not many people can get in the water to hunt there.

What did they put in those pipes anyway

Thanks JB, that's a darn good question. The earlier ones had very small bowls, some really resemble the hash pipes of today, around 3 ins long and stocky. They would hold just enough for a couple of puffs and that was it. There are 2 examples of this type in the Maritime museum in Bermuda (or at least they use to be there) and one of my buddies has one. I haven't found any examples on the web.

New York is definitely loaded. EVERYONE threw EVERYTHING in the water. I'm sure when there's dredging going on some great stuff turns up, but you still can't get to it.

Fantastic finds .I did a bit of diving when I was younger .My first dive was a fresh water dive in November with just a wet suit no hood boots or gloves man was I cold but toughed it out . Did some diving in Bermuda
.Found a few bottles mostly broken marble bottles. Great post enjoyed it very much.

Thank's Digging, I did some diving in Bermuda as well, I use to go there all the time with the Air Force. One of the guys I dove with yesterday, Gilles (he found the navy bowl) dove with Teddy Tucker and crew when he was there with the Canadian Navy Diving Unit. I absolutely love BDA and will be going back there soon, (well I can still afford it).

You guys have some great finds there .I've got to get that dry suit so I can dive late fall and early spring to get the best viz. I,ll never get as many great consistant finds as you folks up there though.

Thanks for sharing those great relics zodiac diverdave . Can't remember seeing an intact pipe on T Net , were the black glass bottles ... RUM :icon_scratch: very KOOL

HMS china from long ago ... like that one too

Thanks Diamonddawg, clay pipes usually don't come out of the ground intact. If your going to find them it will most likely be a water find. This is the first time that I can remember in over 30 years of diving that I have seen 2 intact pipes come up in one day. The Black glass was most likely Rum or wine. The sailors would have their own bottles that they would get their rations in or when in port they would get it filled at the local tavern. I have one that I found years ago that have 3 separate sets of initials scribed into it from each of the sailors that owned it.

Diving is like ice hockey for me, I was probably made for it, but it didn't happen and won't happen! ....Which is why I'll be watching each Sunday to see what you guys come up with.

Thanks IP, I know what you mean about Ice hockey. It seemed that when I got into High School everyone was much larger then me. After I got my bell rung a few times I put the skates away....for good.

Zodiacdiver,
on the bagpipe part you found, after I commented on it....then this morning I attended a Veterans day ceremony at my grandsons elementary school (I am a veteran) and they had a fellow there in full Scottish kilt, and regalia, playing the bagpipe, he played the service song of each branch of the service! First thing I thought of was your find and I was eyeballing his bagpipe pretty hard trying to see all the pieces.

BTW the bagpiper was GREAT! really loud... and I can see how that instrument was a good one to take to a battle to be heard over the loud explosions etc of wartime.

Yea, they are very loud that's for sure. I like the music but in small doses.

Your always welcome to join us Scott. I would love to see you posting up some wicked finds of your own. I know they are in your area.
