Great job GW! That's a bunch of nice early coinage. Glad you can still get in the fields over your way. Everything is off limits in my area now. Have you tried to find the trash pit yet?
Havent tried to find the trash pit at this location but there are a few heavily iron laden areas we should check. I think I did however stumble onto one at this new site we found. While i was digging a super deep signal I began to pull up bits of charcoal and then saw a complete tobacco pipe bowl rolling around in the hole at 18". This place is now planted in corn but we'll get back to this guys fields for more exploration next year. He's given us permission to hunt it all and there are no less than 5 sites that we know of. I suspect there are more hidden ones too. I think there are many hundreds of acres in all and they border a very important creek for the era. Nothing but end to end farms. I really hit the jackpot for old sites when that other farmer bumped into me last year.

I missed this too. So a little late but great hunt, more important as always a great site, ...I need one of those bad.

Sounds like you've definitely found a pit. You should dig and sift that spot thoroughly next fall. Nothing better than digging out a colonial pit. More fun than detecting for sure.

The site is strange. It produced about 100 pieces of small lead/ lead shot but only maybe a few dozen relics. Its damn old though based on the few buckle finds. The front area of the site is in wheat (now a foot tall) and we're thinking maybe we've been hunting an out building only. Will know later this fall once all the fields are clear.

Bill, trying to date my bowl. Did you say you had written something up about dating tobacco pipes? My buddy said the bowl I found is newer because its got a smaller hole.

Sweet finds! Great coins and the tinkler cone is stellar. I also like the serpent musket side decoration!

Cheers,

Buck

Can someone tell me what this copper item is? I found it on the site. Have found several of these - all on early sites. Thanks
I have one similar and was told it was an arrow head also - mine still had rotted wood in it
I was told some of these were made by early copper coins that were traded to the indians - they would hammer the coin out thinner to make some of these

Bill has writen an excellent artical on dating clay pipes but I wont post it up with out his permission so give him a PM if he doesn't respond in a day or two, and yes your friend is correct. The smaller bore in the stem usually meens a newer pipe.

This is amazing stuff GW.

That site looks like it would be heaven for many of us and I can't wait to see what she gives up in the future!

HH,
Chris
