I had a few hours before sunset on Saturday and decided that I would go to my old patch of woods and use a different strategy. This time I decided to detect a patch of brush/thorns that was next to my old "hot spot." I decided that I would go with zero disc, the small coil, max sensitivity- and go really slow. If anything above a 50 repeated, I would dig it.
What an amazing hunt it was. Funny how when you aren't expecting much - that's when you make the best finds. I started off with what looked to be an Indian (based on the wreath and ONE CENT) at about 6-7 inches deep. Day made! Five minutes later I found anotheur one about 5 feet away at the same depth. This one I could make out the headdress so I knew it was an Indian. At this point I'm sky high when I pull yet another Indian. Amazing. The last target came in at a solid 82/83 on my machine- at six inches of depth. When I dug the hole about 4 inches down were the remnants of an old campfire. How old? When I pulled the coin out I originally thought it was a largie. When I got home it turned out to be my first 2-cent piece! The other coins were: my second ever flying eagle cent (1858), an 1863 fatty IHC and a really crisp 1864 IHC. What a great couple of hours! Thanks for looking.
