I picked these up this weekend. At first I thought they were carved rosewood and that I hit the jackpot. Then I saw there were some condition issues and there was metal showing underneath. At first I thought it was some sort of composite material and they were modern. I was a bit surprised, since the quality was so good and they had custom made stands.

After doing more research they are not rosewood, but rather cinnebar. There are some similar ones with very high listing prices here and here.

But there are similar ones that sold for much less. See here.

Any idea how to identify period of this mark?

I've been doing more research on Chinese cinnebar/laquer. The bad news if these are likely not period pieces since originals did not have the metal plate. The good news is that these are not contemporary reproductions. These appear to be late 19th - early 20th century copies of period pieces that were used for export. They are still pretty old and the quality of the carving is great.

Another thing I learned is that Chinese are not that complicated. Will start keeping an eye out for Chinese porcelain.

This site was useful for research: Asian Art Forums - Detail List

Ill tell you real or not very cool pieces great decor
