Hey everyone. The year started off a bit late for me because the weather took forever to turn! I've been hitting the parks and I found 2 14k items at one park! The pendant/chain is weird though... it seems far more corroded than any gold item I've ever seen. when I accidentally scratched it digging it out, I exposed a bit of the gold on the back of the pendant. I also used a bit of sandpaper on one of the chain links that exposed the gold underneath but the outside of the necklace has a brownish tarnished color to it. The other item is a ring which is just like regular gold items I've found, the dirt comes of easily. See pics below...

Great ring! I found a chain very similar to that one marked 14K Italy. But turned out to be a fake :( If you dont have a acid test kit. You can smell the chain, if it smells kinda sour its not gold. Or take it to a pawnshop they will test it for free.

Congrats!

I didn't consider that it might be fake gold marked as real! Thanks hehe. It's a bummer that it might be fake, it doesn't seem to be smelly but I've never seen real gold tarnish like this has. a closer look at the clasp says 14k MADE IN ITALY.. what the heck :) did yours have stones on the front of the pendant?

Mine had a silver cross and clasp. So it wasn't a total bust lol I found it at the trunk of an old tree at the park. Had my heart pumping for sure. I filed my down on some links, it was a copper color then below that looked like gold. Maybe next time for me :)

Here is a pic

chain is pretty much identical to mine except mine is brown lol. That piece weighs more than all of the other gold I've found combined. Harsh :/

Hey it's still a nice find! Have it tested regardless. Mine weighs a little over an ounce, so I was hoping for a big payday! Mine also was in the gold range on my AT Pro

there are lots of fake gold items karat stamped to pass as real. I've seen some dug gold items that have turned like that due to fertilizers being used on the ground, so just because it's turned a weird color don't dismiss it as fake just yet.

Just to show how similar the chains are. Notice that you can see 14k a bit on the clasp (bad angle for it I guess).

The first thing I would do is see if it's attracted to a magnet. If it does, oh well then. But if it doesn't stick then you can proceed with further testing. Usually "14k made in Italy" is the real deal but you'll have to have it tested. If they test it and it's real I wouldn't take anything under $37 DWT (pennyweight)

sent you a PM

hey all, i found a big chain marked 14k italy, took it home found out is was plated , but the chain did test bout 10k
so i took it to one place place , dude would not even look at it said it was junk !

i said ok , went to another shop they tested at 10k , thank you very much, it was a much needed payday of bout $ 400.00
nice !

nice find scott regardless, I do have a gold and silver test kit if you want me to bring it next time we detect.

I have to disagree with Gunner45. I found at least 5 chains marked 14KT Italy this year and not one was real. I hate to say it but there are tons of fake marked gold out there.

Update, just for the heck of it I went ahead and had it acid tested. It's fake! It's brass stamped with 14k. I did try steam cleaning it which made it look a bit nicer than it does in the pic but it's still counterfeit. I've never dug a counterfeit item before, it's interesting but that doesn't replace the new detector I could have had :)

That's a bummer. I would like to see the from of the medallion though. Better luck next time!
