I concur with most of the responders. It sure looks real to me! Congratulations! Welcome to the gold coin club! It's a day you'll never forget! I found my 1825 George IV gold sovereign one year ago on March 23 in the woods here on Long Island.

looks good to me.. great find... what did it read on your detector

also my guess real.. a fake may have had the obverse and reverse facing the same way for asthetics..

looks real to me wtg to the wife hh

OMG...The gold gods smiled on you
If I found something like that I wouldn't need to post it ya'll would hear me jumping for joy where ever you were.

I am thinking this is real. I would leave it be and wear it on a nice gold chain. This is an awesome find

Great going, although I would not leave the eyelet for the neck chain to slip through... Think about it... that is how it probably got lost in the first place.

Frame it and put it on a wall with pictures of where your better gold finding half of you (wife...he he he) located it.
Way to go. Someday I keep saying I gone find me some gold!!! :o

I'd have to say it's real. I'd put it right onto a nice chain. I love to wear gold coins.

Great day (with gold)! ;D

I'll bet it's real!
The best part is that it was found in wood chips! Certain TN members can learn a lesson here and... can "put that in their pipes and smoke it". :D

Extra congratulations!

Cheers!

No- definately a fake. It may be dangerous too. Please send it to me so that I can properly dispose of it.

JK, thats an awesome coin. I'll echo what others have said about it being good that they didn't poke a hole in it for hanging on a chain. You should be able to get someone to remove the loop without damaging the coin.

Hi,
Yep it's a real one, that's the way they turned a lot of them into jewelry up to the late 60's before they had them bezels you just slip the coin into. that hurts the value a little, but a good repairman should be able to take that off with not much illeffects, but I think I'd just leave it as is and enjoy.. if you slip it in a cardboard 2x2 for a dime size coin most of the ring might be hid anyway.
Great find!!

Shes a beauty alright! Congrats on making the Gold Coin Club. I love that coin with the recessed embossment. Awesome!!!

I found my second gold coin in 30 years of detecting last Sept 06 and mine was a jewelry piece also, also a $2-1/2 piece - 1858. It wasn't good enough to make the best of TNet but did make it in this months Western and Eastern Treasures Magazine Best finds of 2006.

Submit yours to W&ET (there's a link at the top of the TNet page) after you authenticate it and you will probably make next years magazine. They send you a beautiful gold leafed certificate and a free copy of the magazine with your find in it.
