Detector(s) used
Minelab Vanquish 340, Tesoro Silver uMax, Compadre, and BH Tracker IV.

Ex: White's Spectrum XLT, Tesoro Cutlass II Umax, and that circa late 70's red handled junk from RadioShack that started it.
decided to scrap today for first time.called some places for prices.the best phone quote was $3.05
a lb in garfield nj but was closing early (would not make it in time).I got a quote of $2.72 a lb
close by in new hampton ny.I stressed the point that it was copper wire with no plastic just patina,
the guy said no problem it is #1 @ $2.72 a lb as long it has no sheathing.I decided to bring just
63 lbs of the wire because it is my first time and I am not of the trusting kind.
when I got there the price changed to $2.60 lb because it was
not shiny with a refrained grin on his lips.his workers (with questionable citizenship) placed it
on the scale (with other metals still on it) and swarmed around it with magnets while the guy
went to a back area for the scale readout that was not in open view.
so instead of 63 lbs @ $2.72 I lose 3lbs and .12 cents.
total 60 lbs @ $2.60 =$156.00
I balked a little just to hint I knew what was going on and took the cash, chalking the rest up for experience.I have 76 lbs more plus some pipes and a small radiator for somewhere else.did I
mention the place was a small hovel(1st clue).

thanks all for the help.below is a pic of the bundled up wire.

Common to the species.Lie when you can, tell the truth if you have to ,and always cheat.
Scrap yards aren't charitable entities.
What happened is not your fault;rather a learning experience.Next time ask direct questions about grade/weight/price and be prepared to argue and take your product back if you can't agree.
'Cause you carried it there does not mean that you have to sell it to them.Scrappin' can be a tough game.

10-4 truckinbutch :argue:

I had a somewhat similar experience a few years back. I had a bucket full of bare bright, weighed 38 pounds on my scale at home. I got to the scrapyard, they weighed it and told me to dump it. I did and asked what the weight was, he said something like 22 pounds. I said BS, I went back grabbed the stuff I just dumped andwalked out. Funny I havent had a problem there since.

Hoff out

better yet
I went to a yard in stony point ny today.told him exactly what I had and got a quote
of $2.75.when I got there he wanted to give me $2.65,the same as my bucket of soldered elbows/tee's.he
told me my wire and pipe was a different alloy :icon_scratch: ,BIG BULL on that >:( .I left and will wait for another day and yard.

that would be #2 copper at the yard I go to. It has to have no corrosion (the green stuff) on it to be #1. You're not gonna find too many people with college degrees working at scrap yards. Hang in there, you'll make some money. :-X

yes a t'net member told me of a yard in garfield nj.if they say it is #2 I will still get a better price than the other
two. :icon_king:

I drove almost 3 hrs once to deal with a new yard and will never go there again... it's now almost 4 months later and I have yet to recieve my cheque. The guy there emailed me back couple of days later and told me the gold product I had was worthless because it was "damaged" and they weren't gonna pay me for it.

I said " fine, you can package it up and send it back to me" He said " what??" I said you heard me the first time, ship it back to me!!

Anyway I got it all back and found another way to sell it, and sell it I did and made $$ from it.

If you find a decent yard stick with them!
