Went exploring today looking for "London Bridge", long story but did find where it was 200 years ago, but severely overgrown. :(
On the way back, BTW, involved walking a few miles thru thick underbrush, I did come upon a new mini homesite from long ago. I saw a depression of about 5 feet in diameter between the Y of two adjoining old roads. I walked in about 20 feet and started to get some iron hits! :) First I got the small cuff button (SUPERFINE b/m) and then the coin, a rather horrible 1822 Coronet Large Cent, but it is the 96th one, so 100 is getting closer. The other button (STANDARD COLOR b/m) was found on the roadway nearby. The iron holder is perhaps the find of the day, It is my second one I have found in over 26 years of pingin.
I will have to work on it to get it in better shape for displaying

Re: 1st neat relic and 1st old coin for 2007(Updated with Cleaned items)

The Iron Trivet is still undergoing Electrolysis, I am new to doing Iron, so it will be a bit before I can show a before and after of the Trivet, but so far, it is cleaning up fairly well.

Here are the buttons, the coin, and the iron encrusted buckle that I found at this small homesite this past week and I was happy with the cleaning results of the buckle.....

Re: 1st neat relic and 1st old coin for 2007

For the first time ever I tried electrolysis cleaning on an iron object, many thanks to all who have previously posted on "how to", it did help in me deciding how to do it.

I do want to say I did my own thing on the cleaning and will post on the Cleaning and Preservation forum what my setup was to add to the many different ideas there are on how to accomplish the task.

OK, remember, this was my first attempt at iron, and it is quite different than the many beach found silver coins I have done in years past.

The Iron Trivet was full of nooks and crannies which made it a bit more difficult I believe in both the cleaning and preservation end, but I am very happy with the results.

Gals, I used a cooking related procedure to preserve the trivet. After much thought during the past few days while the trivet was in the bath I wembled on how to preserve the iron. I read a zillion posts and goggled the heck out of iron preservation but when all was said and done I narrowed my choices down to either spraying it with Acrylic Lacquer, like I do my pewter buttons, or try what the wife suggested and a few on this forum, and that is to treat it like a new cast iron pan!

OK, long story, so making it short and will explain more over in the C&P forum. I baked the trivet for just over an hour at 500+ degrees with the trivet coated with CRISCO.

Here is the before and the after photos. Iron Trivet #2 will be done perhaps by tomorrow and the two old irons I have also found are next.

Holy Crap, Don, your trivet looks great!!! WTG. Thanks for putting the before and after pix in the same post. It's awesome. So now you're going to be doing that with all iron relics, huh?!!

Glad your wife suggested baking it in the oven, my husband now has no doubt I'm nuts. I love the way it ame out, can't wait to see more.

Another use for big, old, rusty nails...........Shishkabobs!

Thanks for the info!
