1st hunt of '09...Cabin fever GO AWAY...SILVER COME HERE

Thank goodness...the head/chest cold that has lingered for weeks now has started to go away. I figured I might as well do away with the cabin fever as well....before it got any worse. ???

My work schedule is really going to cut into my hunt time this year...but I will get out when I can..and will do my best to keep up with everyone's posts here on the forum.

I decided to go to a site that has produced well over the years...but has been pounded to death as well. I don't believe I've ever found anything too old here...but always seem to pop out some silver hidin' deep. It's an old ball diamond...but they put about 5" of fill dirt over it about 5 years ago. The fill covers the ground all the way to the edge of the outfield...so all the silver is in excess of 7" deep. In fact most of the coins I've found here in the last 3 years have been in the 8" to 10" range.

Today was no exception. The ground was nice and moist...and was also fairly clean of trash.

I decided to do the UNTHINKABLE....to take off the 10 x 12 SEF for a short time...and give another coil a shot for the first time in many months. :tard:

Since it was a sweet open area...devoid of trash...and the targets were at extreme depths...I opted for the 10 x 14 Excelerator Coil. It's the only coil I know of that comes close to the performance and depth of my 10 x 12 SEF coil...but it's one heavy sucker. ::)

Over the next 4 hours I popped out 3 Mercs and 11 Wheaties...all at depths of at least 8". One of the wheaties was at 10" and nearly straight on edge...and it made me remember why I liked the 10 x 14 coil  ...but a sore arm reminded me as to why I use it mostly for short periods of time. ;D

I then met up with a buddy at a park we have hit a zillion times in the last 2 years. I decided to put the 10 x 12 SEF coil back on because I realized we hadn't pounded this site with anything other than the 1050 coil.

Over the next 3 hours I popped out a roosey....a washington quarter...an injun'...a HUGE sterling silver ring...7 more wheaties...and two foreign coins.
What a letdown the big one was...as I thought I had dug a large cent...only to find out it was a 1918 British? penny. 8)

My roosey....the washington quarter...the injun'...and 4 of the 7 wheaties were all found while the SE was in a dead null while over iron.
In fact...the 1899 injun' was right at 9" deep in the hole with iron...and screamed through the silence. This startled me...as I was ready to nod off after nearly a 10 second null....before the injun came through.

I've always been told...as have many others...that the SE won't find coins while nulling. If that's the case...I guess I need to throw around 50 to 60 of the silver coins back to the ground...that I found in '08...and about half the coins I found in today's hunt. ::) My SE wasn't resetting...or recovering...it was in a complete dead null when those coins were found. I do not have a sceintific explanation...nor a reason as to why it works...when it "ISN'T" supposed to....but it DOES. It WILL find and hit deep silver while nulling if your iron mask and other settings are right for you.

Thanks for viewing...and thank goodness I can start getting some hunts in. I won't be able to hunt near as often...but I will hunt when I can.

Nice bunch of coins! I use the 10x12 on my exII about 100 percent of the time. Im glad that this coil has not caught on as I believed it is the best coil I have ever put to the soil! I dig 9 to 11 inch small coppers and silvers with this coil regularly. I swing slow and have found that the sweet spot in the center of the coil will pick out silver or copper coins even in heavy trash, full null, and without a proper tone ID.

Hey Bryce, good to see you back in action! Nice finds!
I'm frozen in again. It might warm up this weekend though.
Man, I didn't know you were sick. I was sick as a dog all of January like never before in my life.
I had some kind of lung infection. Absolutely nasty.
Well, I'm glad you scored some February silver!
I hope you can continue to get out, and it doesn't freeze up again.
Nice stuff! Congrats on getting out!
Thanks BK. Yeah...I've had this cold/infection stuff for over 2 weeks now...but I think it's on it's way out.

Reach down there with that SE and convince those silvers to show themselves. Nothing like a minelab for deep silvers. I have to agree with you about the nulls. I went out with my old Sov the other day for a test on an iron infested spot and in the hour I hunted I never heard a threshold but dug an 8" merc and a couple 6-8" wheats.
Good to hear someone other than me that admits these machines will hunt through the nulls.
Thanks for responding John. I'm glad it wasn't just me...and others have experienced the same thing.

Nice finds Bryce..
The silver, wheats, IH's and other coins and the ring
are just "warmer-uppers" for the up coming months
of detecting. Shows the winter lay-off hasn't hurt your
abilities at all!! Look forward to your posts when you have the time.

Thanks G. N....I hope your right about the "warmer uppers".

You know Bryce, I've often wondered and thought about the same thing will the nulling. On my SE, the IM is set at 26 and I have had signals come through while the detector was nulling. I thought for a second that maybe it caught the signal after resetting, but after several sweeps from different angles and finally digging the target, there was in fact iron right there with the target. My "good signal" just happened to be a deep clad dime instead of silver though.

Thanks for bringing this point up. Great finds by the way!!!
Thanks Weasel. Next time the dime won't be clad buddy

Your hunts and finds are always classic, Bryce. You are the man when it comes to finding the deep lurking silvers that you certainly always seem to pull out from the depths  Ron
Thanks Ron. I have to really creep to find most of these because going too fast...and you can just walk over 'em.
I just truly creep to get the best depth I can.

Thanks Dan. It's good to have some UNfrozen ground  I just hope it lasts. It was definately great to get rid of the cabin fever. I didn't find any really old silver...but I think we are on the same page with this bro...."Silver is SILVER"
I'm glad to hear others agree about finding coins in a null. I get tired of people saying we can't do it ::)

Re: 1st hunt of '09...Cabin fever GO AWAY...SILVER COME HERE

Hi Bryce: It looks like you getting back in form. WTG ON THE SILVER . I am in Spain hunting in the water. I have done fairly well, eventhough we have had some bad weather in Feb. It has been rather windy and the surf beaches have been way to rough to hunt. I have 28 gold for Feb and about $300.00 in coins. I have been hunting with a Brit thst lives in France snd have been invited to do some dirt diggin. He found a gold coin in Brittian in 06 that brought $841000.00 at auction WHOW. Glad to see a post from you and keep on diggin.

Les ps I will post some pix of my gold as soon as I figure out my new camera.
