image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgAnyone on here want to hear a treasure hunting story that sounds like pure B.S. here it comes. Sunday was on of my better days of detecting since finding an 1852 $1 gold coin back in 1985. I have been hunting a site where the gov. back in 1855 paid annuities to one of the Indian tribes in my state. The site hadn't produced anything older than an 1886 I.H. Penny and no silver till Sunday. Boy did that ever change. The first coin I dug Sunday was a memorial penny then an I.H. Showed up. Finally dug a 1891 seated dime then about 4 ft. away out comes a 1903 Barber dime. I am thrilled to finally see some silver from this place after hunting it 4 times. Then nothing but shotgun hulls and other trash for about 30 min. Then I get another coin signal and dig a 6 in. deep plug. When I pinpoint the plug the target is in the plug so I try to cut the plug in half with my digger and when I do I see Gold. 50 miles apart & 28 years later I found my 2nd $1 gold coin dated 1854. The coin is in mint condition with absolutely no wear so I am convinced it is from the annuity payment. I am today still having trouble believing this happened to me. Don't know how to put pics on here but if someone knows how I can e-mail them. Man I love this hobby. Thanks for reading and thank you TreasureNet for a great site.

Pictures! congrats! I've only found 1 gold coin ever.

Great story, awesome finds! Congrats! As for the pics... Learn and post!

Congrats!!! Had a great day yesterday but still waiting for my first gold coin!

Great catch !!
There are 4 different 1854 US $1 gold coins; three are Liberty Heads (with a diameter of 13 mm) and the fourth is called an Indian Princess Head (with a diameter of 15 mm). The most common is the former, minted in Philadelphia; the rarest is the 54D (only 2935 minted) whose retail value starts at nearly $2k in VF, going up to $35k.Which ones do you have?
Don.....

The one I dug Sunday has no mint mark & is the Liberty head one.

*Edit. Since he's been able to post a picture of the coins, I nominate his find for the banner. It's a fun story, has historical significance, and the 1854 Liberty gold piece just simply looks brilliant!

262jp, absolutely stunning. Beautiful. Thanx for posting the pix believer!

So mackaydon, you seem to know your coins, prices, grades, etc.... Based on what you see (very crisp condition, as you can see), and based on the year, mint, type, etc... What kind of prices are we talking about, in the current PCGS sheets?

Thanks for posting my pics. It is very much appreciated

Yep, way better than the 15 pull tabs I dug out of a field today. Congrats man. I'd be glowing with a stupid grin on my face for weeks!

You've definitely got my two zincolns beat! :wav: :wav:

Congrats on a great hunt!

Anita

Wow, that coin is a beauty! That's a great story, I would love to find a gold coin. Is there a mint mark on the barber dime? If there is an "s", it is worth a lot.....

The barber dime has an o mint mark.

262jp, you are correct that coin is in near mint condition. Just think a bunch of $1 gold coins were put together to give to the Indians. The gov. put together a big pile of $1 coins to make it look like a lot, not much has changed. However, the reality aside, you've done a terrific job sticking with that area and you deserve what you've found................63bkpkr

I'm no expert in this field, but I'd suspect his Fisher is paid for with sun-day's hull!:icon_thumright:
