1965 silver dime

DON'T clean it! Don't scare me like that. Get it weighed or do a specific gravity test if you feel its the real deal.

Edit: I would also avoid the "drop" test. Dropping the coin to listen to the sound it makes could result in damage and loss of value. Take the time to properly test it.

Welcome to TNet. Silver coinage comes out of the ground relatively clean in my area, or at least doesn't tarnish as described.

Like to see a pic first "Newbie" Run it under warm water and a soft toothbrush. That's NOT going to hurt it! Regardless of what anyone thinks or says. Then post a pic.

red56wolf - Forgot to welcome you to T-Net. As requested photos would help. To clear up any confusion regarding my first post. You said that the coin appeared tarnished. If it is tarnished but the details are legible I would not clean it but if encrusted in dirt then yes, a certain amount of cleaning will be necessary in order to determine what you have. Did you find this in the ground or in a change?

It's really hard to say just by looking at the picture if it's silver or not. I suggest taking it to your local coin dealer and asking his/her opinion.

And welcome to Treasure Net.

WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THAT IT IS SILVER ? LOOK AT THE EDGE FOR THE COPPER LINE. IT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE SILVER TO ME. BUT I GUESS IT IS POSSIBLE. GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY HUNTING

It doesn't look like any toning/tarnishing I've seen on genuine silver coins. That being said it is difficult to tell with 100% certainty if it is silver or not. I wouldn't get my hopes up but do have a professional check it out.

I'm sorry, not to be negative but, it looks clad judging by the photo. usually when I find silver coins they come out of the ground with a "sweet" satin look. not to say yours isn't. I hope it is! these are the things that keep my heart pumping! cheers!

flip it like you are doing a coin toss and if it makes a sweet high pitched ring then it could be the real thing :icon_scratch:

I would not sell it to the dealer that checks it and offers you 5 to 10 dollars for it :tongue3:. Welcome to T-Net..........NGE

Didn't they stop making silver coins after 1964?
