Local Olympic Guru here. Very nice medal. Nice to have the box too... I would not let that go for less than $150. Every athlete who attends the Olympics gets one of these, winner or not. They usually have a different medal for Volunteers and for media or whatever. Anyhow, that is the Athlete's medal, and as such is VERY Good. Since you are in cheap, hold it until the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. You could get 5X the money if you list it for sale during the games.

thanks for the excellent info dejapooh. how can you tell it was an athletes?
box was signed Martha on the back, I can check with the estate co. and try to get an ID

$6! That is awesome!
I collect Olympic items when I find them thrifting or yard-saling cheap enough or they are interesting, but would have loved to have found that!

I recognize it. I have one for sale right now (not on Ebay yet). It used to be $300 to $500, but they are not rare enough to hold that price. Plus, 50 years after the games, the prices tend to drop as the people who participated die, and their medals go on the market. Particpation medals hit about 40 to 60 years after the games, Gold, Silver, and Bronze tend to hit about 60 to 80 years after the games. People don't sell their gold medals, They generally don't sell Dad's gold medal, but uncle bob or Gramps? They become more common. If you can find the name on the estate and if it matches the athlete list, you can throw another $100 on the price. If that person won a gold, you could possibly add another 0 to the price. Quick search, you want to see if it was Martha Randell or Martha Watson. What city was the estate sale in? They are the only U.S. Marthas I see on the team in 1964. They are both appear to still be alive.
