1942d war-time or not war-time?

I have a friend that found a 1942D nickel while coin roll hunting. I'm wondering whether or not it's war-time. I know the difference in the P mintmark...but what about the D and S? Any info would be appreciated.

the Mint mark must be above the DOME to be WARTIME
