1942 S Double Die Mercury?? Ever seen one?

I don't have to. The doubling is on the die. Thus doubled DIE!

It is when the hub leaves two impressions in the die, At the time of the die making. Or something along those lines. lol

You've got it! Not the coin being struck twice.

look at a 1955 double die wheat....

It wasn't struck twice. The original hub was pressed into the die. When it was pulled away and pressure was reapplied to the die, one or the other was inadvertently turned off center, leaving the second impression. Every coin made off that die was doubled, not every coin struck twice.

Enamel7 is correct. The die itself has the doubled image , hence the name doubled die. There are double struck coins, but something completely different from doubled dies. The 1955 doubled die, and every other doubled die coin, is considered a die variety, meaning every coin struck from that die has the doubling.

UGGGGH, I'm not sure what you guys are looking at, but if your looking at the wonky 1942-S dated dime... that is a repunched date, just like the other repunched famous dates of 1942-P and 1942-D Mercury dimes. The only difference is they didn't repunch over a 1941 hub and for whatever reason decided to reinforce or strength the 1942 date. Surprisingly, with all the overdate huba-buba for 1942 that this coin isn't recognized as a collectable variety as the RPD is quite substantial and more noticeable when compared to the 1942/1941-D coin.
