I was looking through a nickel roll, and I found a 1940 S nickel. When I looked at the reverse, I noticed it was not symmetrical. Look on the right side on top of the building. See the extra bump? See how the building reverse is not symmetrical on the roof?

Is that an error?

That's interesting. I don't see how it could be post mint damage. Can you post a better pic? Need to see closer as I think it may have some extra material..

Caught your interest, Huh? I’m out right now, but I’ll have a better picture in four hours. It’s a very busy volunteering day today.

Don't get too exited since even if it is an error coin it's not worth much.

This is not a high-quality photo, but I had to take my hand magnifier and use my phone camera with it. It was pretty difficult, but here’s a close-up of that area. It’s definitely looks like doubling or extra material to me.

One hour and 40 minutes until I can get a REALLY good photo.

Thanks. Sometimes it’s difficult to control my excitement. Comes with ADHD. Thanks for helping me keep my expectations low.

By the way, I also have a coin expert who is a friend of mine on this. I’m waiting for him to get back to me.

OK, I finally got the better photos under high magnification.

See how Monticello is asymmetrical on the roof? Here’s a close-up of the piece that is not supposed to be there.

What do you think? Error?

Looks like that spot may have taken a hit, which forced a small bit of roof up a bit. Compare with other nickels from the era, with similar wear. It appears that spot has a bit less wear than other high points of the reverse. Just my opinion.

Time for more coffee.

It is entirely possible that the extra metal was caused by a genuine die chip. Good Luck! Thanks for posting.

I found out what it is through Internet research.

Crocodile on the roof error. Basically means that there was a piece of cud or something else that made it onto the coin on Monticello‘s roof. It has the profile of a crocodile, hence the name crocodile on the roof.

I’ve compared pictures, and confirmed it.

Well, I may have been wrong. Would not be the first time. With that kind of wear, though, some small die chips can be hard to determine without an in person evaluation. Once you take it to a shop that can evaluate errors, let us know the result. Best to you.

Time for more coffee.

There is actually a shop here in Boise that looks at potential errors. I’ll take it there tomorrow morning.

From what I can tell though, it looks like an error to me.
