Pulled this out of 5 inches of heavy alkali ground last Sunday. I am tempted to clean it but thought I would see what more knowledgables say....too far gone? P2270001.JPGP2270002.JPG

Cleaning could cause more loss of detail. It has character. Put it in a coil holder to remember the occasion. My unprofessional opinion. Any silver is a nice find.

It's kind of a personal choice. Cleaned or not, the collector value is less that it would be without the corrosion. Personally, I'd clean it like I do with other silver in that condition. I soak them in vinegar for several hours or overnight and then use baking soda to rub off the crust and neutralize the acidic action of the vinegar. It will look cleaned, but, IMO, better than crusty.

If you're going to clean it, I'd try a boiling hot peroxide bath and sprinkle oxyclean powder on it while it's bubbling. Then, Q tips to dab away grey/black.

VERY COOL FIND!

It will still have value to someone that needs to fill a hole in their folder.......

I agree wholeheartedly! Bathe the coin in Acetone to arrest (stop) the green Verdigris, rinse with water, pat dry with a towel, place the coin in a 2x2 coin holder, then sell it or keep it. The coin has VG details at the least and someone would likely be willing to pay $30 to $40 to fill a hole in their' Collection.

Good details at best - enviro damage brings it down.
would make an ok filler - till something better came along

Looks like a good candidate for cleaning to me, I don't see significant pitting so it ought to look much better after treatment, I would have already done it with no guilt were it mine. Nice find BTW, don't see many key washingtons get dug and posted.

Thanks for the answers and opinions guys. I think I will leave it alone and sell it. I tend not to keep my finds.

I believe it would bring more money if it was cleaned.
