I know we all love to find gold coins, but a lot of times, ironically, there can be silver coins that ..... given the right date, mint mark, and condition, can fetch prices higher than some gold coins. Assuming the gold coins were not a key mint or something.

Recently I was hunting a park in So. CA, and got a nice 4-star text-book signal deepie silver signal from the turf. At first, when I brought up a merc, I was sorta disappointed. Because the particular area of this park has given up barbers and seated over the years, to hunters in that area. But when I looked at the date and mint mark, my attitude changed. Turned out to be a 1921D in fairly good shape.

I put that puppy on ebay, and it closed this morning for $395.00 Not bad :)

This is why I never rub a merc out in the field. I just leave the dirt on it and put it in a container until I get home. Some of these guys making the videos make me cringe they are so anxious to make out the date.

As they destroy any value to their coins, this only make yours that much more valuable. I can't find a merc any older than 42 so I have nothing to worry about.

Dang I need to check my mercs out.congrats

...even if Tom has made it seem so....gold coins arent what I would call "common",here:laughing7:

You'd have to ask Crusader exactly what he meant, but my post was written in the context of what's above ground.... where of course gold coins are very common. In the ground they're not common for anyone, and neither is anything we would consider a good find. I have dug quite a few things that are rare, have at least the same value or more than an average/typical gold coin find, but they are not things you can go on ebay to buy on a regular basis and that's why I think they're better finds than a gold coin.

Great sale Tom. Let me know if you get to much ground to cover on a site. I've been waiting for an opportunity to visit my former home town. I grew up in Monterey and found my first Silver there in 89', which amazingly, I still have. LOL.

I only meant relatively speaking. In line with the debate, ie. some silver are rarer than gold. I definately didn't mean they are a common find, that would be crazy speak.

nice!! i dug 1 last year not as nice...

Great job Tom! You know I have dug plenty of gold jewelry through the years...and have sold just about all of it. Common silver too. BUT, if I ever dig a gold coin....someone will have to pluck it from my cold dead hand.:laughing7: I would have to think twice about selling that beautiful 21-D Merc also

Congrats Tom:notworthy:

Nice.... Wtg
