I know we all love to find gold coins, but a lot of times, ironically, there can be silver coins that ..... given the right date, mint mark, and condition, can fetch prices higher than some gold coins. Assuming the gold coins were not a key mint or something.

Recently I was hunting a park in So. CA, and got a nice 4-star text-book signal deepie silver signal from the turf. At first, when I brought up a merc, I was sorta disappointed. Because the particular area of this park has given up barbers and seated over the years, to hunters in that area. But when I looked at the date and mint mark, my attitude changed. Turned out to be a 1921D in fairly good shape.

I put that puppy on ebay, and it closed this morning for $395.00 Not bad :)

That's fantastic. Really nice-looking coin!

This is why I never rub a merc out in the field. I just leave the dirt on it and put it in a container until I get home. Some of these guys making the videos make me cringe they are so anxious to make out the date.

Haha, that reminds me of a true story: There was a guy in my area, who got a $10 gold piece that dated to the 1860s, in a muddy lettuce field site. So the coin had gritty mud on it when he pulled it out of the ground. Well guess what he did when he found it? The INSTINCTIVE thing we're ALL going to do when we find a good coin, right? Rub it to see the date! Thus you guessed it: later, when he went to properly run tap water over it and rinse off the dirt, you can STILL to this day see the thumb "scritch scritch" marks right over the date portion of the coin...... Doh! :tongue3:

Gotta love it. When I started detecting finding a gold coin was a huge deal, but once I realized it was more about bragging rights than rarity or value, it dropped down my grail scale quite a bit. I've dug quite a few things I'd personally rate higher than a gold coin.... but I'd still like to find one some day.

Very nice coins:thumbsup:

To me I would rather dig a valuable silver than a gold...personally......I have a hard time letting go of a gold coin, not sure exactly why....have sold pounds of it...at anyrate, like you I have dug key date silvers and up for sale they have gone!!!Did good on some....not so good on others.Well done!!!

that first part doesnt sound right.....I guess what I was meaning to say is its nice to dig something valuable that you can turn around and make some $$ from without regret?

Interesting debate. If it was only about value then Gold Coins would not be our top choice, but the reality of it is, that we want to find them. Even if they are 'common'
